DH heard strange sounds coming from the bathroom yesterday...

He opened the door to find a small brown bird splashing around in our toilet bowl.

After locking the dogs in the bedroom, he opened the door again and it got out, started hopping around the floor, under the couch, behind the TV. It couldn't fly at first, and was soaked.

It took him half an hour to catch it and get it back outside, where it hung out in the sun a bit and then flew away. We keep the door to that bathroom closed at all times, because of the dogs. He insists it wasn't open, the whole day.

We checked and there are no holes in the walls, floor, ceiling. Window hasn't been open in weeks. There's an exhaust fan in the ceiling with 1/4 inch spaces between the slats.

I googled "bird toilet bowl" and there are accounts of this happening to other people, even with the toilet bowl cover closed! There's suggestions that it flew down the vent pipe from the roof.

I guess all the animals are looking for spaces to keep them warm at night. I'm glad he was home to hear it! I guess we need to get up on the roof and check if there's a grate on the vent pipe.

OMG I am sooooo afraid of birds and probably would have freaked out!!

We had a leak this summer in our bathroom from the seal around the vent pipe on the roof. The contractor said that it looks like the seal just was old and was worn and needed to be re-sealed. Thank GOD our walls were open at the time since we just re-started doing the bathroom.

i always feel guilt when I hear of animals ending up in homes... I think because I feel that a house is unnatural in a way, like here was the earth and the land and trees, and then we build homes and dig holes and put gas lines and plumbing lines and electric wires and disturb all the nature around us.

i actually tear up when I see trees being chopped down.

I know, I'm nuts.

We had a bird in our office about a month ago, and think it was in there for a couple of days without us knowing!!! DH yells down to me, "Honey...do you know there's a bird in the house?!" We sometimes leave our back door open for the dogs, but I hadn't left it open since 2 days prior....so I guess the poor bird was trapped in our house!! Good thing the dogs didn't know!

That's bizarre! Swimming underwater in a pipe to your bowl! My parent's house use to have birds that came through the chimney and we would always hear the banging sound of them trying to escape by banging their heads into the bay window! Always a project getting them out the front door yuck!

We had a squirrel come down our chimney when i was a kid. the cat started going bezerk... which made the squirel spaz out... and so on. thank goodness you guys found it before the doggies did!!
