DH is an Auxilary Police Officer and on his way
to the wake for one of the APO's that was fatally shot in the W.Village a few days ago.
The day he came home and I saw him in full uniform over two years ago, my heart sank. I asked him "What's to stop some craze maniac who has it out for cops from shooting you?"
They have the EXACT uniform and it scares me to death. Now I know what it feels like to be the wife of someone in the line of duty.
I just hope that they'll change their uniform in some manner to distinguish them (APOs) from cops on the beat.
I'm glad that they're honoring these two volunteer officers, but it's unfortunate that something tragic has to happen before action is taken.

I could not believe that they volunteer & do not get even police issue kevlar.

I dated an APO back in HS. I always wondered how they could be out there, with virtually no protection.
perps don't distinguish bet. an armed cop and an unarmed one.
My heart goes out to the families of the victims...
and of course, I am always thinking of you and Ricky.

Tell me about it - they only have their night-stick to protect them.
Ricky did tell me that something "fishy" was up w/the incident. They are told that when they hear about something that could potentially put them in the line of danger over the radio, that as APOs they are to STAY AWAY since they do not have anything to protect them.

seriously, i can't understand how these SELFLESS VOLUNTEERS are NOT given some sort of protection!!! at the very least, they should be given BP Vests!!!!!

DH suggested last night that since the NYPD officers are given new bp vests, that their old ones be given to the APOs.
