For any of you that are related to/married to/know a Police officer
Did you ask them what they thought?
I spent about an hour on the phone with my father, and he said the cops reacted too quicky. He also said that he feels that the men who were shot, were trying to flee, when they hit the police officer. He also said that when he was a cop, they did not carry automatic weapons. You had to **** your gun every time you fired. Now, with one pull of the trigger, you can unload a mag no problem.

Oh ok..
My dad retired in 1994, also due to an injury but was on for 20 years. I called him right away for his reaction.

Re: For any of you that are related to/married to/know a Police officer
my father was a NYPD...
he felt it was excessive ETA...he does also feel that when you are in that kind of a moment...and your life is threatened...well that is such a powerful feeling that nobody can truly comprehend unless they are in it..
he also felt that domestic abuse/violence is the MOST dangerous aspect of the job...you go in blinded
just a little side note

I'm seeing my dad tomorrow, so we'll discuss. He was on the NYPD for almost 30 years (1969-1996). He worked in the 75 (East New York), 73 (Brownsville) and 69 (Canarsie). He retired a detective. He has some great stories and plenty of opinions.

I wonder if our fathers knew each other? He worked in Harlem most of his life but I am sure their paths must have crossed at some point. My dad has some awesome stories as well. Unreal!

Nah, my dad was never a driver. In his day, they rode around in what they called a "cop box". It was a little scooter.

My dad taught me to drive, and I must say I am a pretty darn good driver! But I know what you mean! He was Seargant for most of his time and he would get driven around..... But at 61, he's still pretty sharp and white knuckles me a few times!

Re: For any of you that are related to/married to/know a Police officer
Wow, I see some other 75 people! My brother, Kenneth, was in the 75 for over two years before he "won the lottery" (got hired in Nassau) and happily skipped over to Woodbury where he works now. I'll never forget the day that I got the call from him and he told me he had gotten Nassau... I was in Claire's in the mall and just started BAWLING b/c I was so happy to not have to worry myself sick anymore like I did when he was in the city... I was also so happy that my Mom could finally sleep at night again. I'll never forget that moment- he literally screamed like he had won the 50 million dollar powerball or something and it still gives me goosebumps to this day.
He has been in Nassau now for just over a year. He graduated number one in his Academy class from NYPD, graduated number one in his Academy class from Nassau and was named valedictorian. He also received "best in shooting" (they awarded him with a very special gun that had his name engraved on it), "best in athletic ability" with a percent body fat of just over 7.5% and he received a reward for heroism after saving the life of a fellow Officer in training when he almost drowned during a water excercise.
My favorite memory of Kenneth in the Academy was when he was sprayed in the face, on purpose, with Mace, LOL. They do this to make sure you can handle it- but for kicks, they film it and send you home with a DVD 'keepsake' haha! For being number one in his class (he had a 99.9% GPA on all of his exams and received a 103 on his final-- he also received a 100 on the Police test to be eligible for the job) he got to have his pick of precincts to work in- so he chose the second in Nassau: Woodbury. After all he had been through in East New York he deserves it.
He was not a rookie when he joined the NYPD before Nassau... His first job ever as an Officer was a State Trooper in Virginia from the age of 21 (the first place that would hire him- he went and moved without thinking twice) for over four years before coming back home to NY to work in the city, to take a pay cut no less!, so he could be closer to our family after having his son, my nephew, Christopher. He would work the night shift and attend college during the day... then, when shifts changed he would attend college at night. I really don't know when he slept! So he has his Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice.
At this time, after achieving so much in such a short amount of time he recently decided to attend Law School and become a Lawyer FOR the County. He will represent them in cases once he graduates. I'm so proud of my brother and I love him dearly. I look up to him and how hard he has always worked and continues to work. He is the bravest person I know... He's also single for the ladies who are not married/involved!! LOL OK, bragging over! He would just DIE if he knew I was sharing all of this But I had to b/c he is truly a hero and a wonderful person.
There are bad apples in every bunch... Well, one could say that no group is composed of saints alone. None is sheltered from mistakes or misdeeds. All have their Cain and Abel but there are SO many who are SO wonderful and my brother is one of them.
I'm sure there were a million things that the Police that night could have done differently- I'm sure that the harshest critics will be themselves! Who wants to live with knowing they took someone's life b/c they felt they had no choice? No one. But, it is apart of the job. Is it easy to now say that they acted too fast or they should have done this, or should not have done that... of course but they did not have a crystal ball- they did not know what the next few SECONDS would hold for them and when your life is threatened- VERY few people can handle themselves "perfectly". We will learn from this, the Police will, hopefully people who commit crimes will, hopefully the public will- things happen and we move on, hopefully: wiser and in a better position then we were to begin with. Thank you for reading everyone and take care.
PS, I have a TON of other family members who are in Law Enforcement but I think I have babbled enough!

Re: For any of you that are related to/married to/know a Police officer
my FH works out in south jamaica, and my brother is in queens village...so they work, daily in that area.
my FH basically said that there are so many different stories from eyewitness, police, and crime scene investigator accounts that it's hard to tell what happened. but that most cops that work in that area or are currently on the job, aren't passing judgement just yet. they know how the media & DCPI work, and that 99% of the time, the story just isn't true.
trust me, i know about this, cause of a case earlier this summer, and my brother was accused of some stuff...and automatically the newspapers labeled the incident as"Four WHITE police officers" implying that the cops were all caucasin...um...my brother is hispanic. that part never came out and some other stuff in the story. instead eyewitness news just ran with it, and basically implied that it was yet another case of racial profiling. (i don't get how you racially profile in a predominantly african american populated area, but whatever)
bottomline--my bro and FH both say, wait till the fact allll come out. sadly, this will be bured around page 15 when it all gets figured out

My dad was laid off in '74 and as far as I know he STILL drives like he's on the job.
My uncle (a retired Suffolk Co. cop) is a slow, leisurely driver

This is funny, I was thinking of asking this.
My Dad felt it was excessive force and thinks alcohol played a role.
He is saddened to see what the NYPD has been reduced to with the effects of the media....
He said things like this DID happen often in the past but werent a media circus...Makign it difficult to always know the truth.
