DH lost job - anyone know of maintenance work?
Hi - my DH has been doing maintenance at a group home company for over 4 years & was out on workers' comp & they now told him they don't have a job for him to return to (he already exhausted his FMLA). Anyway, he is looking for something - he is very "handy". He does plumbing, carpentry, etc. and used to have his own tile installation business. Just wondering if anyone know of something or if anyone needs work done around your homes! Thanks.

sorry, I don't know of any place in particular. But maybe he can try in a co-op or condo development. I know that co-ops have a general office that you can contact & I bet the tips from residents are great.
I currently live in a co-op development in queens & there are alot of maintenance people who work here, I bet people come & go all the time.

thanks - we're looking into everything. The problem is that many of these places pay lousy and the benefits (for family) are limited. I'm checking every site I know!

have you tried the school districts?
My brother worked for Island Trees and did pretty well. The benefits were excellent.
They may not be in session now, but it's something to look into.

yes - he applied for two already, but they ended up hiring from within - they restructured due to contract changes - he's been unlucky with this so far!

Yes, I've been on there for some time now, thanks!
We are hoping to get some work in private homes for him to supplement his unemployment until he finds something else.

I was going to suggest a school also, a college/university actually. I work at a college and I don't believe the pay is great for maintenance/physical plant workers, but the benefits are good, there is tuition remission, and overtime.
Good Luck!

Re: DH lost job - anyone know of maintenance work?
try posting contact info at condo complexes. There tend to be older people and/or single people who are looking for help or a handy man.
Also, consider placing flyers in local mailboxes. People will respond.
What kind of work does he do? What did he do full time before being let go?

Re: DH lost job - anyone know of maintenance work?
Sorry to hear about DH losing his job. I wish him luck in finding something. I used to live in Fairhaven Apartments in Hicksville. They have 3 complexes in Nassau and I in Suffolk. I'm sure they could use maintenance people, cause when I called w/a problem them took forever to fix it and I've heard that situation is still the same, so they may be short handed. The website is fairhavenapts.com

The "handyman" work would just be extra for now to get us through. He worked as a maintenance mechanic for group homes on the east end of the island. They provided our family insurance benefits, so he needs to find something with benefits by November when they stop paying his.

Also try The Ranches in Mount Sinai. I know about a month ago they were looking for a full time maintenance person. I'm not sure what the pay was though.
The other idea is a Facility Management company like JLL - http://www.joneslanglasalle.com/Pages/Home.aspx. I heard they were just awarded the CA account (http://ca.com/us/) in Islandia. Perhaps there is a position posted.
