lost my job today
it came so out of the blue. my boss called me into her office, told me that the company had just lost a big account (I was aware of this), then told me that they weren't happy with my job performance. when i told her how shocked i was and how i wish she would've given me some sort of warning that she was unhappy, she just said "well you know that those last two assignments I gave you weren't where they should be for your level." Sigh. Fine. I did two projects that she didn't like, but she never said that she was unhappy with my overall performance. not once. sigh. this has never happened to me before. i just don't get how they throw this things at you suddenly. i'm still in shock. 
ETA: What I REALLY don't understand is this: the last time someone got fired, they were given several verbal warnings beforehand. I was given none. It just doesn't make sense to me.

That really stinks, I am so sorry. That was unfair of her to do that so suddenly. They should have certain protocol to follow (getting written up, etc) before just firing you. I hope you can find something better fast!

That is TERRIBLE !  the fact that you were never told after the FIRST time that she didnt like something. that shows what a good boss she is   
you would think she could have told you to improve on XYZ the first time.
One of my professors did this to me. All this "that was FAAAABULOUS !" about my work and then gave me a little less of a grade than I expected, and she said the same things you just heard!
So did she let you go because of the lost account or because of your performance?
I know you have to go through what youre feeling right now, but please try not to let it get you down too much.
you sound like a hard worker that takes pride in her work. and someone else will be very lucky to have you soon.
This will be a blessing in disguise for you. How far would she have let you go up that ladder if she was not happy with your work.? you need to go where youre appreciated and acknowledged!

The same thing happened to me 2 weeks before my wedding actually. She told me she didnt like how I did things, but I had a feeling it was because I had to take time off for my honeymoon. I was DEVASTATED for weeks! Don't worry, things seem terrible now but you will be fine soon. And she is not a good boss at all!

Thanks. I don't know which was the greatest contributing factor but i'd be willing to bet the lost account had a lot to do with it since it was a lot of lost revenue and it was the first thing that was brought up when they told me i'd be leaving. i just never saw this coming.

I'm so sorry. I was fired once when I worked for a Publishing company...I was devastated...BUT it led to a whole new career for me! I understand what you are going through!

it was your boss' responsibility to tell you your job performance was below standard. Otherwise, how would you have been able to improve??
does your job have a union that you can go to?
