DH's interview process.... *UPDATE*
My husband teaches in Brooklyn in a really dangerous area. He is happy to have a job but naturally, he wants to find something on Long Island so while he is teaching there he is always actively searching.
About three weeks ago a district on LI called (he applied via OLAS) and he went in for an interview... he did a writing sample, took him two hours because it was three different long writing samples that he had to do. Then, he was called in and interviewed for almost one hour by a panel of four people.
At the end they told him that they are going to, out of all of the people applying, choose five people for a demo lesson, then they are going to call back two MAYBE three tops to meet the superintendent and then that person makes the final decision and chooses one person. They told him the entire process would take like three weeks.
After the writing sample and initial interview they called him the very next day for the demo. They set that up for the following week. He did that and they called him the very next day to ask him to meet the Superintendent. They set that up for Thursday. The Superintendent interviewed him for about 45 minutes, then told him that he would be called on Monday or Tuesday either way with the final decision.
He did not get a call yesterday but the Superintendent said Monday or Tuesday. But because of how timely they were with everything else, calling him right away, he is SO let down! I told him to be positive and it's only Tuesday morning. But yeah he's upset -- I said they told you Monday OR Tuesday! I feel so bad. This was such a long process and he felt like he had it so now he is nervous.
I hate seeing him down like this - I feel SO bad. I hate him being in the murder capital of the city. I just wish a LI district would give him a chance. He is SO hard working and dedicated. This stinks!
******************************
UPDATE:
Vinny found out today, when the Superintendent called him at six o'clock at night, that the position is HIS. (The time surprised us all lol!)
It took the sup. two weeks to call him when she initially said it would be a matter of maybe three days LOL! So, it was stressful and a bit of a rollercoaster but he GOT THE JOB!
He is THRILLED.
Wow, what a long wait -- the process was just shy of a month long from first interview, to demo, to superintendent meeting, to being called and told.
What a great birthday gift -- his birthday is the 30th

Re: DH's interview process....
It isn't over yet! Tell Vinny he still has a chance. Is he NYCDOE? Maybe next year he can use open market to transfer if he doesn't get this job.
I just transferred to a new school in Queens and am so excited. I am so glad to get out of my old building and it has cut my commute in 1/2!
Good luck to him!!!!!

Thank you, I will tell him to keep his chin up
And yes, doing a transfer to another school within NYC would be a great option and something that he's looking into for sure! It's just with so many of his students getting arrested for violent crimes it is getting so scary!

I understand. My schools was one of the "10 most dangerous schools in NYC" when I started working there 8 years ago.

He got SO close with an interview this year in Queens, but she didn't hire him- apparently she didnt like the fact that he took off to be with his daughter... anyway - it broke my heart to see him sooo upset since he had to go through a process
send vinny hugs totally understand how he feels

Re: DH's interview process....
My thoughts are that the delay is based on references. It could be forDH or another candidate, but summer is sometimes tough to get in touch with references.
Usually if they hire someone else, they mail a letter...not a phone call

Re: DH's interview process....
Update -- Vinny rec'd a call from the Superintendent on Wednesday. They apologized very much for being late in calling back, they stated that the delay was due to getting the other candidates in for interviews, calling references, and stuff like that. He was told he is still very much an excellent candidate and that he will know for sure, either way, by Monday afternoon.
Fingers crossed, thanks everyone.
PS, I thought it was very nice / considerate for them to call him -- he thanked them VERY much.

Re: DH's interview process....
Thats awesome that he's still in it! The interview process can seem like forever and not all school districts will even call you back to let you know. Ill keep my fingers crossed.
Where does he work BTW. DH works in Bushwick/Bed Stuy and always has crazy stories.

Re: DH's interview process....
OK, I thought I would share my experience of how I got my job on LI from NYC. First off, they never call when they say they will so tell him not to worry. Now, I was teaching in NYC in a nice area of queens and stupid me transferred to S. Ozone Park to be closer to where I lived. At the time it was the dumbest decision but now it was the best. I took a job teaching special ed to first graders and I was literally getting beat up and called a white b***h. My principal was incompetent and hated me bc I was not her race. I started sending my resume out to LI schools and got a call from East MEadow. I took a leave replacement teaching HS resource room having never taught HS before and not knowing if I would have a job the following year. I also got many other calls from districts on LI who were looking to hire in October, just like EM was. Some leave replacements, some probationary. I went on several interviews for probationary spots but EM was the one that hired me. I left NYC in October around Halloween. I went to EM and needless to say, 7 years later I am still here, tenured and happy as can be. I feel his pain teaching in the ghetto. He should look during the school year and interview then. The competition is smaller because not everyone is willing to leave in the middle of the year but if he is as miserable as I was, I'm sure he wouldn't mind. Keep your eyes open towards the end of September. Good luck!

Re: DH's interview process.... *UPDATE*
It is middle school physical science... half year chemistry and half year physics. not regents b/c it is just middle school so it's really cool subject area. Thanks everyone for their congrats and well wishes! He and I really appreciate it!
DH is certified in bio, chem, and general science grades 5 to 12.
Traditionally, science teachers are certified 7 - 12 but DH got the "middle child extension" to extend his certification to include grades 5 and 6 which is great for middle schools who are 6, 7, and 8 -- his new one is one of them -- which really put him ahead b/c they realize he can be switched to teach any grade in their school. DH does not want me posting the district! LOL! He's so weird - it is on Long Island hahaha that's all I can say
Anywho, we are thrilled and it is a huge relief.
