Diana's post got me thinking...Wall Units, are they "out"??
Seeing Diana's wall unit post got me thinking. Are wall units now "out"? I see them for a dime a dozen on C/L and even sometimes for free. It is because of the flat screens that's making them obsolete? Such a shame since I've seen some lovely pieces.

I have always loved them. I personally feel it makes a room cozy. Perhaps people are doing away with them due to mounting TVs on the wall and stuff, but I prefer them.
My TV is thin as sin and 55 inches and I feel the entertainment center completes the look.

Re: Diana's post got me thinking...Wall Units, are they "out"??
I have one that we love, its very open (kind of like a bookcase on top and on the sides) and has great storage. When we were looking we saw a ton of different styles so thet are not all old school units anymore. I dont like fake fireplaces so if I didnt have a built in fireplace to hang my tv over, I would always go with the entertainment center.

I think it is because of flat screens - a lot of the units are not designed for flat screens, since they are more rectangular.
Also a lot of the other accessories are smaller now and more compact.
I think they are nice for larger rooms, but for a small room like I have, it would be too big.

Depends on the look. I feel they are great in a media room, big room in the basement. Otherwise, I feel they look too bulky

Re: Diana's post got me thinking...Wall Units, are they "out"??
i LOVE my entertainment center!! LOVE LOVE LOVE!!
I get lots of compliments on it too.
it has a glass door on either side and lights up. then there's a shelf over the tv part. it works really well for us.
and there are shelves in it and under has some cabinets for my photo albums, candles, cd's, dvd's. etc.
its a newer looking one too.
we have a 48" flat screen in it and it looks just fine. i think bc this unit is a newer one, it was made for a flat screen.

Re: Diana's post got me thinking...Wall Units, are they "out"??
I don't think they look outdated if you get the right look. I do think it's going to look a bit "off" if you're trying to put a flat screen in an older wall unit that was intended for old of the old school square tv's though. Also, I think you really need a big room to pull off a wall unit, otherwise it just looks claustrophobic to me.
We just wall mounted our tv above a media center that looks kinda like a buffet. I love how it looks and it kept it from being too high above the fire place. If it went over the fireplace in our room, we'd all have major stiff necks from looking up at it.

I think it depends on the space and the decor. It can work for some. In our place, it wouldn't work - it would dwarf the room, I feel.

Ok can someone please explain to me what exactly a "wall unit" is?
Is that an entertainment center?
Sorry for being naive.

I think it depends on the style & room. I would never put a wall unit in a small den. I love everything about ours. We have it with a 52'' flat screen.

No way. Any magazine you look at, Crate & Barrel, Pottery Barn, Restoration, etc. they all show modern entertainment centers! I personally love them and I have a traditional oak one.
