did anyone catch Larry King on Friday night? re: autism

I had NO idea that babies were subject to so many shots and immunizations these days.

autism risk notwithstanding, i am NOT cool with all of them. at ALL.

definitely not hep B. we have no risk for it.

i have to do more research, but I was wondering if anyone saw it and was as shocked as I was.

I did not watch it but I did alot of reading and research when I was pregnant with DS in 2006 regarding the number of immunizations.

I developed my own vaccination schedule for DS and will do the same for this baby.

Re: did anyone catch Larry King on Friday night? re: autism

Coming over as a recent new parent, I also declined the Hep B. The main reason they are vaccinating at birth is simply b/c that is the main time they have the opportunity for HIGH risk populations who may never return for well visits for a child as the child gets older. So basically, they are lumping ALL children into the this boat. And it's not so much YOUR child that needs the protection, it's that they are trying to eradicate a disease that is prevalent in higher risk populations. So I am personally STRONGLY against the Hep B vaccine at birth. Unless a parent or very close family member HAS the disease, a child has almost NO risk of catching this mostly blood bourne illness until they become sexually active (hopefully that's a LONG time from birth).

Def do your research, as I know you are an educated person, and this vaccination issue is a complicated one.

I knew what they were talking about prior to watching the show as i have a 9 month old daughter, i also chose to devise my own vaccine schedule and vaccinate her more slowly. However my hubby works in a hospital on occassions so we did add a few things we would have otherwise avoided

However, at 9 months my daughter has completed only 3 whole vaccines. I think average is like 9 or more by now.

I am delaying a lot of them until she goes to pre school and they are required and she is around many other children.

My daughter is home with me and has no interaction with ANY other children or any other people aside hubby and myself 95% of the time

I didn't see the show, however just wanted to add how important it is to do your own research and figure out what is right for you and your kid.

I'm not sure about your childcare situation-if you/DH will be staying home, using family, using a day care center. However, depending upon which of these options you choose, you may be backed into a schedule.

For us, it made the most sense to vaccinate DD on time with the recommended vaccinations. Unless something drastically changes by Nov when this next bundle arrives, we will do the same thing.

I did see the show, however my friend is a director for autism at LIJ, and she said it wasnt accuarate, and there are many school of though still reguarding Vaccines, and there is no real link that directly correlates with vaccines and autism and the main vaccine they are talking about is the MMR. Im a pediatric nurse, and im going to follow the schedule by the CDC. there are a few vaccines im declining
the rotaviris and hep A. I think if separating and spacing the MMR is a good idea. This is all JMO.Chat Icon

yeah, it's not even so much the autism link that bothers me. it's just the sheer amount of vaccinations. especially those that are not really necessary.

I just find the whole thing disturbing. everyone seemed to want to be proven right....instead of looking for the truth.

I am not a health practioner, but I have worked in the medical field (and now for the govt investigating the medical field) so I will be sure to do my research. I am VERY wary of pharmaceutical companies, so this really rang some bells for me.

thanks for your input! Chat Icon

I totally agree, with that ur saying though. There are alot of vaccines. I just feel that majority of kids benefit from it in the long run. JMO. But i think research is the best thing u can do.

Not sure how many moms-to-be on this board are already on the parenting board or have had the opportunity to start their research BUT I just wanted to raise awareness that many moms who started separating MMR are running into trouble as there is a shortage of the single does vaccines. There is a rumor that they may have stopped making it.

So, moms who gave their DC a single dose are now faced with trying to figure out how to complete the vaccine or starting from scratch and re-vaccinating with the multiple dose vaccine which means giving your kid an extra dose of a vaccine he may have already had.

This is such a tough decision for parentsChat Icon

i agree, this is a very personal decision and i think every parent has to do what they feel comfortable with given the information that is available.

i have personally seen children with many of the diseases that are vaccinated against, and in many instances the outcomes for these children were not good.

the way i interpret the available data, the risks to children from getting these diseases vastly outweigh the risks of the vaccines. therefore i will continue to vaccinate my children on the recommended schedule.

I started DS's vaccinations at 3 mo. and he only gets 1 vaccine per visit (or per month...it means extra office visits but peace of mind for me).

DS did not get the Hep B shot in the hospital at birth. He also did not get the Rotovirus vaccine, the flu vaccine nor the chicken pox vaccine. My ped. does not administer the rotovirus vaccine unless a parent requests it for daycare, etc. I will not give DS the chicken pox vaccine until it is required for him to attend school.

In addition, the MMR vaccine will be broken up into 3 seperate shots and DS just turned 2 and I will most likely give the 1st shot this fall/winter after this baby is born. (And for those that think the MMR vaccine is no longer being given seperate, it is. My ped. is stockpiled on the seperate vaccines and has put them on the side for me.)

ETA: if you want I can e-mail you my spreadsheet of the vaccines and what age he got them. Just give me your e-mail address.

Make sure when picking a ped you discuss this with them also. Some have no problems alterating the schedule....some will not allow it at all.

Re: did anyone catch Larry King on Friday night? re: autism

I never delayed Alex's vaccinations or altered the schedule, nor do I plan on doing that for this baby. With that said, however, I did extensive research on the issue, and spoke with my pediatrician about it at length, in making my decision, along with DH. If this is something you plan on doing, I would suggest you do as much research as possible, discuss with your pediatrician, and weigh the pros and cons. If you plan on putting baby in daycare, you have to take that into consideration as well, as some schools have certain requirements, and as well, as someone mentioned, choose your pediatrician wisely because many have strict policies on vaccinations that they will not stray from.

we are using our family practice doc as our pediatrician and dave is going today - armed with ALL the shots (i got a list from my healthy pregnancy program) and asking what they prefer to do.

By 6 months, there are 12 shots that the baby should have done and that sheer number of foreign substances worries me.

i personally don't believe in the autism link....but just the number of chemicals floating in her tiny body worries me.

you know, I never understood the whole 'interview the pediatrician" until these thoughts started running through my head Friday night.

I am going to speak to my OB about this at my next visit. I also want to find out my hospitals policy on the Hep B shot, and if they have any issues releasing the baby without receiving it (I know already that is one shot my child will not be receiving...and I will switch doctors and birthing hosptials if need be to prevent it.)

everyone has different risk factors. my child will be cared for by my MIL in our home, until such time that we decide to put him/her in school/day care, so I am taking that into consideration.

I agree that is is extremely personal, and everyone has to take different exposures/risks into consideration. Everyone wants what is best for the child. No one wants to see their baby sick Chat Icon Chat Icon .

my only concern is over doing it, based on our risk exposure. I will be thinking long and hard about this one.

I hope we can keep this discussion open. one of the strangest things about this is that I had NO IDEA there was such a dramatic change in the schedule in the last 10-15 years. It was definitely an eye opener. Chat Icon

There are other reasons to interview the pediatrician as well - for us, we wanted someone who was open to, and knowledgeable about raising babies/children vegetarian. In addition, I wanted to find a pediatrician who was supportive of BFing - it makes a huge difference as I've heard horror stories from friends who were pressured inordinately by their pediatricians to give up nursing and introduce formula instead.

We picked a pediatrician who has an excellent reputation and whose philosophies align with our parenting outlook. I can't tell you what a difference it makes, especially early on when you feel like you have no idea what you're doing and need more guidance and reassurance than usual.

As a new parent myself - I just don't know what to think. I would have no clue how to come up with my own vaccination schedule. As DD gets closer and closer to the MMR vaccination, i get more and more worried. Should I separate, should I not - I have to put my faith in my Dr's, the CDC and the AAP. They are the experts and it is the only way to keep my sanity.

One of the main reasons that I have to believe there is no link to autism w/MMR is b/c there are people on this site who work with autistic children and have said that some that were never vaccinated have autism Chat Icon

Here was my DS vaccination schedule (he's now 21 months). Doing it this way (he only got 2 shots per visit) still kept my DS up to date but limited how much he got at each visit as i didnt want to give him to many at a time. I did not even do the Heb B till he was 10 months (i refused it in the hospital-no one gave me a hard time at all). Also my doctors office doesn't do the rotavirus vaccine and i haven't done the MMR or chicken pox shot yet. The MMR i plan on doing at 2 years or older and the chicken pox-I am not sure when i will do it.
2 months- DTaP and HIB
3 months- Polio and Prevnar (pneumococcal)
4 months- DTaP and HIB
5 months- Polio and Prevnar (pneumococcal)
6 months- DTaP and HIB
7 months- polio and Prevnar (pneumococcal)
10 months- Heb B #1
11 months- Heb B #2
18 month- Heb B #3

Re: did anyone catch Larry King on Friday night? re: autism

We delayed DSs vaccines so that he got either one or two shots per visit. Please know that some shots contain multiple vaccines so while it is only one shot, there are many diseases it helps to eradicate. DS had all of his shots within the recommended window of time for him to have the shots. I will do the same thing for this baby. As for splitting the MMR you will have to find a ped that has stockpiled them because many do not have them available anymore or they are already "reserved" for other peoples' children who were already born.
