PSA - and my night from heck.
First, let me say I am at work and the whole family is fine. BUT I haven't really been to sleep yet because we all spent the night in Southside Hospital.
It's a long azz story - but the short version is this: Last night I was doing laundry and noticed the laundry room had a faintly sooty smell. I didn't think anything of it since our furnace is due for a check up anyway. We went upstairs and I thought I heard beeping, but we were all watching old home movies so I didn't think on it too much. I put my little guys upstairs to bed and went back down to do laundry and I heard beeping. I could not figure out what it was. Rob said it was probably one of their toys or the dehumidifier and I was going nuts looking for it and couldn't find the source. Finally - I found it. In the laundry room above the rafters. One of the carbon monoxide detectors was going off! I took it upstairs and Rob insisted it was probaby just the batteries. So he tested the batteries, deemed them low and replaced them. Then replaced the batteries in the detectors upstairs and on the main floor. The ones on the main floor and the basement ALL started going off again. The one upstairs did not.
We called Marran (oil company) who said we needed to call the Fire Department before they could come. They came and had everyone leave the house and go to the car. Two trucks, flood lights, tons of men in uniform... They came to the car to let us know that an ambulance had been called so we could be 'checked' since the CO levels were extremely high.
We all seemed fine. I had a headache and my 12 year old nephew who was visiting was a little sick to his stomach (which could just as easily have been nerves). They called the hospital and the doctor said that even though Rob and I could refuse being taken to the hospital, they would strongly suggest we go just to be checked out. We evidently had no choice about the kids since the levels in the house were 'off the charts'.
So we went, got oxygen and blood work and were released a few hours later after our blood levels came back okay.
The downside is that spending the night in ER sucks. The upside is that everyone is okay and the boys have an adventure to talk about. They are REFUSING to remove their hospital bands!
We were told by the firemen, the doctors and the ambulance corp that if we hadn't left the house, we would not have spent the night at the hospital.. but we would likely not be alive to talk about it either. SO.. check your Carbon Monoxide detectors... because you just never know.
