We had DS's first birthday. We just had a backyard BBQ; Hot dogs, burgers, BBQ Chicken breasts, potato salad, cole slaw, chips, etc.

I haven't had one yet, but I've been to some. They had trays of mac n cheese and lasagna and I know they sell these in big trays at BJs. Also meatballs (which you can get big bags of at a wholesale club), mixed veggies and some kind of rice.

If it's the summer then definately have a BBQ. DS is in February so we had it catered and had everyone inside. It's nice to be able to have something ourdoors.

Andy's was on Sunday, we did BBQ.
Sarah's was in the winter, we had pizza. I was 6 months pregnant and fortunately my family is really laid back.
ETA: I always make their birthday cakes, just like my mommy did for me.

I had it catered from a local place -- sandwiches, salads, that sort of thing. My mom made the cake. It was VERY low key.

We had catered food, hero, salads. It ended up being way too much food. So we know how to cut it down now for future birthday parties...

I did similar food for both kids...heros, salads, 2 hot trays/dishes and cookies, ice cream and cake. Both my kids are born in the spring/summer months, so we had backyard parties.

We had DD's 1st party at our house last Feb. Friends of ours own a restaurant so they catered the food - I cannot rem what was served seriously..I know everyone loved it but I have serious mommy brain from 17mths of little sleep..I did make the cake though and boy do I remember that process!!

We catered. I've done her parties at the house before with us making food and it was just too much work. We got a hero and salads and one or two hot foods.

I had it catered and it was August. I got eggplant, pasta etc. I know it was super hot for hot food but I had very little food left people loved it!

Re: did anyone have dc's 1st bday at your house?
Bella's 1st bday was in Feb so we couldn't have a BBQ. Instead we (well my DH) made mini burgers, sandwiches, pizzas, tacos etc. with a bunch of picking food. (if all that isn't picking food! LOL) For dessert we just had cake and fresh fruit, coffee and tea. It worked out fine.

Both times I catered from a local italian place (I had 40-50 people each time).

Re: did anyone have dc's 1st bday at your house?
DD's party is in a few weeks. We're getting sandwiches & salads from a local deli/caterer. It's from 11-2 pm. Usually, DH barbeques, but I don't want him to be cooking the whole time & missing all the fun!

Re: did anyone have dc's 1st bday at your house?
we did last month. I was trying to go easy on food, but we still had tons. I tried to stay away from hot food, so it was super easy.
Main dishes were sandwich platters of italian panini's and assorted wraps, fried chicken homemade potato salad, pasta salad (balsamic w/veggies & mozz), macaroni salad (mayo) tossed green salad w/goat cheese, walnuts & cranberries garlic knots & bread
we also had bruschetta, pigs in a blanket, eggplant dip, hardboiled eggs, cucumber provincale, stuffed potatoes, prosciutto purses, fresh mozz & tomato, fresh guac & chips, veggie platter, etc.
2 cakes, and fruit platters.
Everything was done in advance though, so we got to enjoy the party (and I hired a hostess - she rocked)
