Did anyone have umbilical cord issues in pregnancy?
hi ladies,
did any of you have marginal insertion of the cord or velamentous insertion of the cord?
how was your pregnancy handled and how did you deliver?
did you have any complications as a result?
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!

i've apparently got one of these issues with my current pregnancy (to be determined tomorrow) and was hoping there were some moms who had experience with this... thanks

Re: Did anyone have umbilical cord issues in pregnancy?
I dont know if this is going to help...
But maybe it'll ease your mind a bit..
A marginal insertion is rather common and just means that things are going to be monitored more often...
From what I understand a velamentous cord insertion would have been seen on your Level II and there wouldnt be any question..KWIM?
The babies cord is probably at the tip of the placenta. They probably want to do the follow up sonogram to make sure it's not Velamentous...
Did they mention anything about Vasa Previa?

hey
during my 20wk anatomy scan they found there to definitely be a marginal insertion, but the ultrasound tech had a hard time tracing all of the cord vessels into the placenta and so did the OB when he tried. it looked like it was PROBABLY a velamentous insertion, but i will need a higher powered ultrasound to tell. so i am going to a high risk OB tomorrow who will do that and i believe some other tests focusing on the cord.
no mention of vasa previa at this moment, thank GOD (or i wouldn't have slept even a little since monday). although i'm not sure that they would have been able to see that? i'm assuming they'll look for it tomorrow?
thanks for replying
ETA: my understanding was also that marginal insertion is not uncommon... which is why i was hoping at least someone will have had it on this board... but i've posted this question on two chat boards and have gotten no one, so i'm left wondering if it's really that common?

To me...the fact that they were able to trace some of the vessels into the placenta is definitely a good thing!!!!
Im going to say that a marginal insertion is probably pretty common. It's the term that might be uncommon...KWIM?
Hang in there...and please let me know how you make out.

Re: Did anyone have umbilical cord issues in pregnancy?
does marginal mean that it isnt quite in the center. If it does that I have that. It is off to the side a little bit but not enough to be a major concern they said. I am dealing with other complications though.

hopefully i will know more about this tomorrow... but as of now i know:
-if your cord is off center but not close to the edge it's called an "eccentric insertion". that's basically a variant of normal and not concerning.
-if your cord is all the way at the edge it's called a "marginal insertion"... which is not terrible, but definitely something you'd rather not have...
hope you're doing ok with the other complications

Re: Did anyone have umbilical cord issues in pregnancy?
I didn't have what you are talking about...but I did have a 2 vessel cord...meaning that DD's umbilical cord was missing an artery. I was watched pretty carefully...sonograms almost every 2 weeks.
