Did anyone relocate just so you could be a SAHM?
My DH and I are considering moving to the NC / SC area near his mom so I could do this...we'd be able to sell our house in NJ and make a profit then buy or build a house down in the area.

Re: Did anyone relocate just so you could be a SAHM?
we don't have any kids yet, but we're strongly considering this! unfortunately, it's more likely that DH would be the SAHD, than me being a SAHM. In theory, i would LOVE to stay home, but put into practice- i just dont think i could cut it. Im pretty much the most UNdomestic woman you'll ever meet. DH is good with all that stuff, and i would make the better salary wherever we went, most likely, so it would be him at home. But, we're pretty set on Leaving NY as soon as i'm done with my program, so that we could have a nice home on 1 salary

that was part of the reason we moved to GA....so we could afford a home and so that I can stay home when the kids come home from school. I'm hoping to find the right balance between work and staying home

Re: Did anyone relocate just so you could be a SAHM?
Not exactly but now that I am a mother I most definitely would in a heartbeat.
We lived in CO when we got married but we were both originally from NY and even with both my DH and I both having very well paying jobs there is no way we could live on one salary in NY and honestly to me its just not worth it to stay there. I always wanted to leave and I did when I finished college. I lived in TN for 5 years then moved to CO to be with DH. He's been here in CO for 11 years. He is close with his family but we just work out visits. I didn't really have any strong ties in NY so it was easy for me to leave and my mom lives here now. Honestly being able to stay home with your baby is a wonderful gift and if you could be happy living elsewhere then go for it.

Re: Did anyone relocate just so you could be a SAHM?
I now live in Florida.. I was a SAHM in NY but we werent making it. We decided to come down here.. and WE LOVE IT!! Its a total change of atmosphere and it really took us about a year to get through the emotional ups and downs of a long distance move.. but I can stay home and take care of my son, and in Feb. my daughter too, without worrying things will be too tight. We also live close to my parents and although we moved down here to have help if we needed it.. I really find I dont need it as much as I thought we would! It also helps that you have the house in NJ already.. that will give you a little bit more cushion to transition.. HTH.. if you have any questions, feel free to FM me!

Re: Did anyone relocate just so you could be a SAHM?
Thanks everyone
How was it adjusting to being away from family? MY biggest concern is that my parents will take it personally...I keep telling my DH that we have to live for us and not for other people. I know my mom would want to be close to her (future) grandkids, so my hope would be that they would move down when they retire.

That is a big reason that I agreed to leave.

Re: Did anyone relocate just so you could be a SAHM?
We have been giving it definite consideration lately (since my sister lives in TX, that's probably where we'll end up - well, maybe not after this week ) but I don't know if I will ever fully sell the idea to hubby since he has his own business here.

Re: Did anyone relocate just so you could be a SAHM?
We've thought about it. DH's parents live in OH and it's very inexpensive to live there compared with NY, but I'm an attorney and I don't want to have to take another bar exam so we've hesitated. However, if I thought it would mean that I could definitely be a SAHM, I'd do it in a heartbeart.

Re: Did anyone relocate just so you could be a SAHM?
Im PG and Ive been pushing this for a while. We would make a nikce profit on the sale of our house and be able to buy as house outright down south and not have any mortgage...I would be able to be a SAHM. I woluld love it. DH is interested....more than before, so Im crossing my fingers. But I think we're looking for at south western VA

Re: Did anyone relocate just so you could be a SAHM?
I would really consider it if DH would agree to it. My baby is due in April, and all I've ever wanted to do was be a SAHM but I know that will never happen here on LI. I know that if we sell our house and move elsewhere, we will have a small mortgage and be able to live much more comfortably. My salary would remain the same pretty much anywhere we would go but the problem is that DH would probably make much less. So, I don't know how it would actually work out financially. I think we're going to wait until after the baby comes to really give this serious consideration.

Re: Did anyone relocate just so you could be a SAHM?
Glad to know I am not alone.....I told my DH well, we would just have to seriously look for jobs, make phone calls, etc. It's all about taking that first step!!!

Re: Did anyone relocate just so you could be a SAHM?
We already have a baby and are thinking about relocating, not even for me to be SAHM but for all 3 of us to have a better life. You can get SO much more for your money everywhere else but The tristate area and the quality of life is so much higher.
I am not sure how long it wil take us but we started doing some research and sending out resumes... i think it's so much harder to look for a job out of state...
