Did I do the wrong thing?

DS has his 6th double ear infection (and he's only 10 months old.) Anyway they put him on Augmentin a few weeks ago (infection #5).

My DD was on this and it's harsh. For some reason he didn't have any of the typical reactions (diarrhea and rash) - instead he got constipated and had bad abdominal pain. We took him off at the peds recommendation on day 7 (his ears were clear.)

Now a few weeks later he got infection #6. Put him back on the augmentin. This time he has severe diarrhea (out of the diaper 5 - 7 times a day), NO appetite and vomitting. It's Sunday and I couldn't get the ped. So I decided NOT to give him anymore (he's only on day 3.) He was suffering so much. We were putting acidophilous in his bottle and it seemed to make it worse.

Do you think I was wrong for stopping the medication so soon? If it was just diarrhea I would have kept it up (DD survived) but the vomitting scared me since he wasn't taking anything in.

It's not a virus - he's in good spirits outside of not wanting to eat and only vomitting right after he finally does. No fever.

The vomiting would scare me too because they can get dehydrated. I think I would have done the same thing.

Hmmm he could have a stomach virus also. The timing could be a coincidence or it could be a severe reaction. Both my kids always did/do well on Augmentin. I think stopping the meds was a good thing though.

On a different note. I would suggest going to see an ENT with that many ear infections. It was the best thing we ever did for Damien. Good Luck Chat Icon

Thanks Stacey. DD had the tubes put in this past August and needs them done again (they are coming out and she's not draining anymoreChat Icon ) and DS saw the ENT 2 weeks ago. He said next infection make the appointment. So he will get them too. Just have to get him better first. I can't believe DD's didn't even last a yearChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon This is going to cost me close to $4KChat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Did I do the wrong thing?

I don't think he should have been placed on augmentin for #6 to begin with...

I'll say one thing though... he CAN'T take amoxicillin again for these ear infections. 2 partial courses of amoxicillin most certainly will promote an amoxicillin-resistant infection Chat Icon he needs to go on anoter type of antibiotic pronto...

Oh another thing my kids always did good on Omicef for ear infections too. Not sure if that is an option.

I had NO idea my DD was on it at least 5 times. She ended up going on clyndamicin and it didn't work, hence the tubes.

Stacey - we tried high dose amoxicillan and omnicef. Omnicef made his sick and the high dose amoxicillian worked twice but that was it...
