Did solids make your baby constipated?
Brendan has always been a once a week pooper, but it was always very liquidy. (I was EBF). Since I've been giving him solids 2-3x a day now I think he's been constipated. He's been grunting and groaning and seems likes he's straining to go all day long. I stopped giving him the rice cereal about a week ago, just oatmeal now. And for the past few days I've been giving him prunes too. Do you think it's from the cereal and the iron in it?

Oatmeal sits better with my DD. The rice daily was constipating her too. Prunes make her explosive  bananas and anything potato based tend to be binding as well. The extra iron might be doing it. Think of what it did to all of us preggo??

Yes, although it wasn't a severe problem. It was definitely a change their digestive system had to get used to.
eta. Iron can definitely constipate them.

if its rice cereal that will constipate, also banannas and apples will. I found though as he got older his system is much better and he can tolerate more rice and bannanas.

I heard the rice cereal may be constipating the the barley cereal may make her go more. Neither seemed to affect Jordana.

It definitly might be especially if he is eating the rice one. I try to give him a bottle of water with brown corn sryup and that helps him. The Ped. told me that trick and it works like a charm. She said 1tsp to 1oz but I put less. If he drinks plain water then I would try to give him that.

Yes, when we started solids my DS was a little constipated. I gave him water (2oz) and that helped. But, after a while even with the water he got constipated. Now I give him 1oz of pear juice mixed with 3 oz of water and he has been doing a lot better.
