Did someone ever tell you that you would never be able to achieve something and you DID!
2 instances come to mind...
Senior Year of HS...Drivers Ed teacher told me I would never ever pass the driver's test...passed it on 1st try
The VP of Marketing at an old job (one that I was fired from) asked me on my last day what I was "planning on doing with myself now" and I said I was going to become a teacher and this ba$tard had the nerve to say "that's what you think"

YUP....having a child so young. Granted it was hard, but I raised a responsible, caring, independant daughter. Who is now living her dream in Alaska!

I remember my guidance counselor in HS telling me that I shouldn't apply to the schools I was appyling to and should "just go to suffolk" I was in AP classes, took college courses in HS, had great grades-straight As-NO, but good grades-was very involved in activities at school and in my church and girl scouts- and he said, I wouldnt get it in... UMMM okay- I got into my university-early acceptance and withdrew my other applications Graduated a year early from my undergrad in English and got my MAT in one year and finished with a 4.0 In your face Mr. Keane!

My guidance counselor in hs told me that I could never make it through dental hygiene school and that her sister who had better grades than me dropped out from the pressure. I visited that b*tch with my honors degree a few years later and said I just wanted to show you what determination can do. Never say never!

Yes and unfortunatley it was my father. He would always tell me I would end up being not much and wouldnt find that "perfect" person; But I got him back the day of my wedding when he was the "guest" and watched someone else walk me down the aisle. proved to him I could do it without any of his help, and you know what it worked. He sat like a miserable lump the entire wedding, and you could see it in his eyes. Job well done Jenn

That is so awful. What kind of guidance counselors are those??? That is a terrible thing to say to a HS student. Good for you guys for going and proving them wrong!!!
I was once told by my old boss in NY that moving for a man i was dating for only 6 months would never work-that she always saw it end in disaster.
3 years later we are married, more in love than before...with a baby. I wanted to send her an email updating her-and found out she was fired!

Re: Did someone ever tell you that you would never be able to achieve something and you DID!
The HS guidance counselor stories remind me of my school's counselors who knew nothing about schools outside the SUNY system. They pushed a SUNY on everyone! So strange...

No one believed me when I said I would run a marathon...did it, trained on my own.

Exs laughed at me when I said that I wanted to write music and sing.
Got rid of them. Wrote music and sung. Learned the guitar. Played with other musicians.
And composed/played piano for several stage productions! So there!!

Yes, within the past few years I have been told this more than once...
I was told not to get a 2nd job after we got married. The person said it would "ruin" our marriage if I was out of the house. It worked out FINE and I saved the $$ just like I wanted to.
I was also told not to have our friend live with us (rent out a bedroom) because it would forever ruin our friendship and things are never the same when you live together. Again, it worked out FINE and I had no regrets.

Re: Did someone ever tell you that you would never be able to achieve something and you DID!
this one is a little funny for me... because i'm in the process of proving them wrong.
as a single-mom, when i was told i'd never finish college by so many... i'm now looking at schools to go back in jan 08.
the second is with my fil. he said that our buying this house is he biggest mistake we can make and that we'll be in foreclosure in no time because we're buying more house than we can afford... i'm happy to say that we just paid off one of our credit cards, and we're working on the next one... slowly i'll get it done... i'm going to prove to him that not only can we "make it"... we're going to THRIVE!!

Re: Did someone ever tell you that you would never be able to achieve something and you DID!
I had an ex that was emotionally abusive. He told me that I would never find anyone who could love me, I would be alone forever and I would never have children, I would live with my parents forever etc. He said this to keep my self esteem low so that I wouldnt leave him.
Lets see I have a great husband who loves me, I have a beautiful son, I own my own home, I made more of myself then I ever thought I could.
Sometimes I want to see him just to show him what an azz he was/is

Re: Did someone ever tell you that you would never be able to achieve something and you DID!
It sticks with me to today. HS guidance counselor told me I wouldn't get a scholarship to college that my SAT scores were too low (the were well over 1000 and have over a 90 average, active on school life, and not applying to ivy league schools). I had retook the test and came home that day and got my second score and it was lower and I cried. I knew I couldn't afford to go to college without a scholarship. Well I got 2 scholarships to different colleges and went to college and graduated Cum Laude and #1 in my major! haha!

Re: Did someone ever tell you that you would never be able to achieve something and you DID!
No one has ever told me that I could NEVER do something, but I have encountered negative attitudes and implications from naysayers. The only one that really comes to mind is the starting of my business, which worked out great for me in spite of all the "how are you going to do this" and "how will you handle that?"
