Did you dress your kids in red, white and blue today.
I do every year on the anniversary. Ava wore her Communion Cross and Brody wore the one from his Baptisim. I will take them to church tonight to light candles. We have always said a prayer for the "Angels", but this is the first year that Ava knows what happened.
Do you do anything with your children?

I don't and I am not sure how to approach it with them. We dress up for fancy parties and holidays which celebrate the cause, so how do you differentiate between a "holiday" and one that you are just showing respect for?

No, I don't dress my children in red white and blue. I thought about having my oldest wear his flag shirt, but it is picture day. My kids know what happened on 9/11, we travel through NYC often so we talk about the towers and what happened to them, and see the progress of them being rebuilt. Today was the first time my youngest saw photos of the actual event on TV though. We recognized the moment of silence when the first plane hit right before school drop off.

My children wear a uniform.
I did notice a lot of my high school students wore their Old Navy 2012 flag t-shirt today.
My high school was one of the first organizations (took just under a year) to erect a 9-11 memorial to the alumni victims. For the past week, dozens of lg. flags are waving on the front lawn. Tonight, like every year, there is a beautiful and very moving candle-light vigil. Hundreds of people from the community, many dignitaries and the families of the victims attend.

Never even thought of it.
According to my 4th grader, our school didn't recognize 9/11 at all today. She said absolutely no mention of it, either in the morning announcement or in her classroom. Last year there was mention, my guess is due to the 10th anniv.

I never thought about it...but here's the kicker...my work school asked us to dress red/white/blue and I did! Totally flaked with the kids.

As a history teacher, this infuriates me!!!
My 9th graders were only 3 years old on 9-11. It is our duty to educate the next generation about this day. To not is to dishonor the victims and their families.
Of course, it must be age appropriate but to do nothing???
I spent the first 15 minutes of the period recounting my personal account of that day...
-Walking past my co-worker and her customs officer husband in the hallway outside of her classroom. He was told by his commanding officer to "come say goodbye" to her in case we were attacked again and he died
-All of the male faculty members who were volunteer firefighters running past the Supt and Prin. because they now had to cover Queens and Brooklyn fire houses.
-Racing into the guidance office and frantically pulling the student files of my next class to check their parents employers thinking, "Oh dear God, please, please, please let none of them work in those buildings."
It amazes me. Every year Japan has a national day of morning for the victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki... 67 years ago and the country stops. It's only been 11 years and not even a mention

My childrens school requested they wear red white and blue yesterday for Patriot Day. They observed the moments of silence in the morning and breifly spoke about what happened on sept 11 in DD's 3rd grade class. I would be very upset if nothing was done at the school to remember and teach about 9/11

My oldest had a lesson and a 10 question quiz regarding 9/11. I was surprised, but it IS part of history, so they should be learning about it. My kindergartener said they didn't talk about it at all, but I'm not sure if that is 100% accurate, or she wasn't paying attention over morning announcements.

DS school didn't request it but I did dress him in RW&B. I thought it was important for him to understand why this day was different than any other day. We also read, "September 12th, we knew everything would be all right" (a book written by children for children) before school to talk about what Sept 11th means to us today.

In my school the principal made an announcement in the morning and all students and faculty were encouraged to wear red, white and blue. K-3 discussed everyday heroes and how Americans come together and work together for the common good. Grades 4 and 5 talked specifically about 9/11 since they are of an age to better understand it. A Kindergartner might not realize why they were discussing heroes, but it was discussed on an age appropriate level.

Her elementary school sent a note home to wear red white and blue so yes she did. We didn't do anything else.
