Did you turn the carseat around on your DC's 1st birthday
Seamus will be 1 on Wednesday
He is over the weight limit already. He has been trying to turn around in the seat lately when he hears me or DH talk, etc
Did you turn the seat around right when they turned 1? Did you wait?

Nope. Waited until 21 months for my first daughter. My second daughter is still rear facing at almost 20 months.

Right after she turned 1 we turned it forward facing. She was at the weight limit and hated being rear facing.

Nope....DS is 13 months. He is still comfy, his feet don't touch the seat yet....doesn't complain.....so he is staying!

Re: Did you turn the carseat around on your DC's 1st birthday
Yes we did. He was the weight limit and we were comfortable doing it.
My ped did say last month that the new recommendation is to wait until they are 2 to turn it around.
My ds has been turned around for a while now so there was no way he was going back.

Re: Did you turn the carseat around on your DC's 1st birthday
no we didn't...she wasn't complaining and even though she technically COULD be turned around since she was the right weight, she was still comfy rear facing. DH JUST turned the carseat forward facing this evening and DD is 14 1/2 months. Her feet were starting to touch the seat.

Re: Did you turn the carseat around on your DC's 1st birthday
Since it's safest facing the rear we kept it as long as he would tolerate it - which was about 15 months. He was well over the weight limit before then, but wanted him rear facing for as long as possible.

Re: Did you turn the carseat around on your DC's 1st birthday
With the new recommendations saying to wait until 2 years, and all of the factual evidence pointing to greater safety the longer you keep them rear-facing, we didn't turn DC around until around 18 months (back when the recommendation was still 12 months).
With what I know now, I would recommend keeping them rear facing until they get close to the maximum weight allowance for the rear-facing seat, which varies by manufacturer, but is always much greater than 1 year.
The government minimum is 1 year. I wouldn't put my DC's safety in the hands of the government minimum standards......

Re: Did you turn the carseat around on your DC's 1st birthday
We turned Ryan this past weekend. He was 1 June 24th.
I asked my ped about the new recommendation suggested by AAP and he said he never heard such a thing But regardless, Ryan was starting to look really uncomfy that way so we decided to switch him.

If she's at the weight limit we will but if not we'll keep it rear facing as per the APA recommendation.

Re: Did you turn the carseat around on your DC's 1st birthday
The 20 lbs 1 year deal is the minimum recommendation. We didn't turn DD's car seat around until 18 months as per the car seat installer (safety chris) who told us - that it is better to have a broken leg (for being too tall) than to turn the seat at 1 year and have permanent spinal or neck injuries. That was enough for us to wait until he recommended turning her. I didn't want to risk a permanent injury just so my DD could look out a bit easier. The new Academy of Pediatrics rec is 2 or the seats rear facing weight limit (which I think for most seats is like 30-35 lbs.
