Diet & Fitness in regards to emotional states

I am one of those people that lose weight and are more energetic when I am happy. When I am stressed out or depressed, I don't have any desire to work out and I eat a lot of bad things.

How do you change this? I keep trying to talk myself up, telling myself I can exercise even though I am upset. I convince myself it will help me feel better because i truly know IT WILL help me feel better. yet even though my heart and mind knows this, my body doesn't respond. I know I am going to be more upset tomorrow if I don't because now, not only am I stressed out and depressed but now I'm also getting fat...

No matter what I try I still seem to go back to these emotional bad habits and I don't know how to stop. I had a reward system in place for myself but once my routine broke, I haven't been able to get back into a groove. Any advice?

My advice is just get out there even if just for one mile and just run. Dont give yourself time to talk yourself out of it. Go home today after work or whatever you are doing and just get dressed, put your sneakers on and say you'll just go for 10 minutes. If you feel you want to stop after the 10 then stop. But most likely you'll feel like you can do another few minutes! Good luck and feel betterChat Icon

For me, I don't let exercise/nutrition take on emotional states or have anything to do with my mood other than making them feel better. Its something I do no matter what. Just like I brush my teeth when I am happy or sad, I exercise too. Make sense?

I am the same way and it's hiitting me hard right now. I'm upset about something and I find myself binging on junk and not finding the energy to work out. I know I will feel better after I exercise but I'm in such a funk and I can't make myself do it. Chat Icon

I totally understand, I was just coming on here to post about this exact same thing!!!

I would love some advice too, because I broke my routine about a month ago and can't seem to get started again. I was on week 8 of the C25K and I haven't run since mid August. Chat Icon Every year since being in NY I get depressed around this time, and it gets progressively worse as the winter approaches (I'm from FL so seasons are a HUGE change for me). I have no motivation and binge eat, even if it's relatively healthy foods. I can't seem to snap out of it!

Coming from someone with a history of depression, this is not as easy as it sounds. Let's say on a scale of 1 to 10, my energy level a month ago was pretty high, let's say it was an 8 (I chase after a 15 month old, so it will never be a 10 Chat Icon ). Now I would put it at a 3, some days a 4. It's really hard to just keep up with the every day stuff house stuff, without even thinking about exercise!

Thanks everyone for your responses (as varied as they were!)


By 7:30 at night, I thought I had already blown it, but by 8:30 I decided to go to the gym anyway and actually did one of my longest times on the treadmill in awhile. I did over 45 minutes and over 3.5 miles and I felt great afterwards. I ended up being happy on the scale this morning.


Today, I am in yet another funk- not eating as well and also can't seem to get myself to exercise again but hopefully that will change later. I'm wishing I can find it in me somewhere to do something similar to what happened yesterday.

no worries, and ITA!! I know just what you mean about the depression, everyday household type items, weather changes, etc. And while it is not as easy as some people make it out to be (for me personally anyway) I just wish it was easy for me to just make it part of my day- something i have to do rather than a choice. Somehow, I can easily convince myself out of doing it. But i'm trying to make that change and I hope you can too if that is what you want. Hugs Back!!!

I have no advice because I am right there with you. It is amazing what I can do when everything is going great but then I hit a bump and its SO hard for me to keep going with that same intensity. I would love to detach my emotions from diet/fitness but it is definitely not easy.

The best way I can control my eating habits is by not buying any "bad things". I try to stock up on healthy foods and I try to keep a few healthy snacks in the house at all times.

When I was first diagnosed with anxiety/depression it was really difficult. The medication I was on would not always be helpful and there were days I just didn't feel like exercising. BUT, I always tried to separate it from my mood and make it something I had to do to be healthy. Like i said, I brush my teeth no matter what..I sweat once a day, no matter what. It took some time to get into but I repated that to myself daily and it eventually took. Now I don't even think about it. I just do it.

I think it's soemthing you just have to force yourself to do. In the end it will only make you feel better. Even if it's not a hardcore workout. Go for a walk, do some yoga or pilates...just move daily!

Thank you for this, there might be hope for me yet Chat Icon I am going to do whatever I can to make myself run every day, or even just go for a 45 minute walk...SOMETHING. As soon as I break my routine for a few days in a row I can't seem to pull it together to get back on it.

This is what I do. There really isn't junk food in my house. So if I am going to binge...I end up binging on grapes! Although its not the best thing in the world, its better than ice cream and chips, right?
