Difference between regular spit up and reflux/gastric problems?

I was wondering how you know the difference between regular baby spit up and if your baby has a problem? Also, did your baby always have this problem or did it develop after awhile? TIA!

If your baby is happy, it is regular spit up. If your baby can lie down flat without getting upset, there likely isn't reflux.

That's what's worrying me. For the last 1-2 weeks, when he lies flat, we have spit up fairly quickly. I can't change a diaper without spit up and now he's starting to do it in the swing, which is in the reclined position.
ETA He hasn't been really crying, but he's really fussy and sounds mucousy before he does it.

My son spits up when I change his diaper after a feeding too. Every time. Also when I try to put him right back to sleep after a night feeding and lay him in his bassinet. He doesn't fuss or cry though when it happens, it just spurts right out of his little mouth! He spits up a lot, so I'm worried about reflux, but people say it's normal baby spit up. Sometimes he pulls away from the breast and cries, which also is a sign of reflux, but it can also just be gas.

Ditto. I thought she would never stop spitting up so much but she was always okay, it just came up a lot. She finally stopped at 6 months.

This isn't necessarily true. DD is almost always happy and smiling - including when she was spitting up. She didn't have most of the "regular" symptoms of reflux - other than spitting up more than 3 hours after a feeding.

Her symptoms were:

That she spit up alot - at times it seemed like there was nothing left in her!

That she would spit up clear (a while after she ate and there was nothing left in her stomach)

And a few times she stopped breathing - this was caused by the reflux coming up and her natural reaction to not inhale so that the liquid wouldn't go into her lungs.

She never arched her back, fussed after eating, or made a "sour" face.

She started on Zantac which made it worse and then we swithced her to Axid. What a world of difference! She rarely spits up now. We used to both be covered - I would change both of our outfits multiple times a day Chat Icon
