disability and health insurance issue
so i found out on friday that while i am on maternity leave i will have to pay for my health insurance . it is 460/per pay period so if i am out the whole 3 months it will equal almost $2800. ugh. so on top of not being paid, i will owe my job $$$$. just needed to vent.

Re: disability and health insurance issue
Would it be possible for your DH to get coverage instead?
Or is there a plan you could apply for through the state? Family Health Plus, etc?

That doesn't seem right. I'm so sorry. I have never heard of such a thing. Is that even allowed under FMLA? I thought they have to cover your benefits during FMLA? I could be wrong.

I had to pay for my insurance benefits when I was on maternity leave with my son (2007). The company I worked for was small and so I didn't qualify for FMLA. The company I work for now is also small. So if I have another baby, I'll have to pay for health insurance with them too. Totally s u c k s

Re: disability and health insurance issue
FMLA has nothing to do with health insurance. I also have to pay for insurance out of pocket while on leave. You're paying the same amount that you normally would, but since you're not on payroll then there's no paycheck for them to deduct it from.

I also have to pay for mine. FMLA unfortunately has nothing to do with it.
Let's all move to Sweden!

Re: disability and health insurance issue
FMLA just means they have to continue your benefits and hold your job. do you normally pay a portion out of pocket for health insurance? Most companies make you pay the amount that typically comes out of your paycheck while on leave. It is not something they normally pay and they don't want to eat the expense while you are out.

Re: disability and health insurance issue
I guess that does make sense. I always had a disability check and now that I think about it I was on DH's insurance but had I not been the premium would have come out of my checks.

FMLA does have regulations re: health insurance. If you're eligible for FMLA, your employer must continue your health insurance during your leave. You are only required to pay the portion of your premium that you had been paying prior to leave. If you're not getting paid, you'll have to write a check to your employer.

Same here. I had to pay for my health insurance while I was out with DS.

they are covered under FMLA, this is our portion (or at least in my case, not sure about the OP) that would normally come out of my check. Since I am not receiving a check, I am responsible for it

Re: disability and health insurance issue
since i will not have a paycheck i will be responsible for the health insurance.
i just didnt anticipate how costly it was this time around. with dd, my health insurance was so much cheaper.
unfortunately dh does not get health insurance as he is an independant contractor.
etd to add that i realzed that it wouldnt work for cobra...lol

someone mentioned to me that i should look into cobra. is that possible? since the cobra laws have changed, they thought it might be cheaper.
The only issue you might have here, is that if you cancel your insurance while you're out, will you be able to pick it back up once you go back. You might not want interruption in your insurance considering you want your baby to be covered-and all your checkups.
Can your job start taking out those insurance payments now?

Cobra will not be cheaper, at least not in my opinion.

I don't think Cobra will work for your situation. Cobra allows to to continue on your company's group plan. The premium you would pay for cobra is the entire amount your employer pays for your insurance. Unless you are laid off during the periods outlined in the latest legislation.
Here is a link to the DOL page on COBRA COBRA

Are you eligible for FMLA? Do you normally have $460 taken out of your paycheck for each pay period?
Can you start putting money aside for that expense?

Re: disability and health insurance issue
I have the same issue with my job - I had it last time as well.
I only had to start paying it once I returned to work, and then they were able to break it up over several paychecks. Can you see if that's an option?

Why is this sucky? If you think about it, if you had any other ailment or surgery, you would have to continue to pay for health insurance while you were out if you wanted continued coverage.
I agree it does stink, but why should the company pay for your health insurance when they are already paying their own premiums to give insurance?
My company makes me pay for my insurance while I'm out, on upaid maternity eave.
