Do I need a matron/driver assistant on bus?
DS is 3 and has been accepted to a special needs preschool and I am filling out the paperwork, specifically the transportation paperwork. The idea of him riding the bus with no one except the driver is frightening but I don't think there is a medical reason why he needs an asst. The form requires the doctor's signature. What did/would you do? is there likely to be one on the bus for someone else?

For safety reasons I would definitely request one. It doesn't have to be a 1:1 you can ask for a shared or just a bus matron. It was always a given for us when we talked transportation so it may be some sort of law that at least one other person needs to be on the bus. Just ask at your meeting.

Re: Do I need a matron/driver assistant on bus?
I believe there is always a matron on the buses. I know there is one on both buses for my DD, and I didn't have to ask for it or have it included in the paperwork. The kids need to be buckled into the seats, and you aren't allowed on the bus. The matron is the one who takes the DC onto the bus and gets them into their seat and buckled.

There will always be a matron on any kind of special needs bus. The only way you'd need it written on the IEP is if you wanted a 1:1

Re: Do I need a matron/driver assistant on bus?
It said the exact opposite of that on the paperwork from the bus co. That there wouldn't be a Matron unless requested in writing by dr.

I work in EI and transition kids into CPSE. I usually help my Parents fill out the transportation form. Are you referring to the bottom of the form where it specifies car seat? EI forms might be a bit different. If your Ped would sign the form I absolutely 100% would request assistance. Feel free to FM me with questions.

Re: Do I need a matron/driver assistant on bus?
Generally, all the buses have one matron. The only way to guarantee you have one is to have it on your IEP. The way my DS's school explained it to me was that technically, if you didn't have the paperwork filled out and the matron was assigned to a child on the bus who no longer rode the bus, you could lose the matron. I don't know if that really happens, but having the paperwork completed is the only way you are guaranteed the matron.
Generally at the IEP meeting, they ask you if your child will ride the bus and I think there was a form asks if you want a matron (but maybe that was when he was in EI?) I do remember asking the pediatrician to sign the form. My pediatrician would sign off on whatever I asked her to and told me to take whatever services they were willing to offer.

Yep that's the impression that I get is that most buses have just bc at least one child needed it or asked for it.

Most busses have a matron designated for all of the children. If it were for one child specifically technically that matron would not be able to assist any other children. Like a 1:1 TA

So let's say nobody requests one, then there may not be one??? Then who is supposed to buckle the carseats for the children if there is no matron? Parents are not allowed on the bus. Driver must stay in seat. 3 & 4 year old children must be in carseats.

I'm not saying it makes sense. But unless they are misleading me the paperwork that came with the bus form said that one is not provided unless that form is filled out. So yes maybe coincidentally all these buses have one b/c there is always at least one person on the bus who needs it and requested it.
