do people ever take hand me downs of newborn/tiny baby sizes?

I have all of Luce's newborn and 3 month clothes that don't fit him anymore.

I know a few preggo's that might be able to use them (Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon ) but what are the odds they'd ever get a chance to?

when did you as a BTDT mom start using/accepting clothes from other BTDT's.

I barely was able to get him into everything he received...some of the stuff was only worn once if at all...b/c he was gifted with so much. we really didn't have to get him anything but pj's (and won't have to still until he goes up to 6-9 months!!)

would it be better to give it to a shelter or something...to people who are in desperate need? or do you think that I could save them for preggos I know and they would be put to good use?Chat Icon

I gave some of Tyler's clothes to a friend who just adopted a baby. I think it depends on the person, with Jack, I had SOOOO many clothes that I didn't want to take hand-me-downs that could have gone to someone who really needed them.

I would just ask your friends if they want it, and let them know they don't HAVE to take it KWIM?!

Most people I know (myself included) only used new stuff for the first baby but were more open to hand me downs for the 2nd+ baby.

I can only speak for myself, I was being bratty about having everything new for our first. Chat Icon

That's how I was too. For the twins, I take anything I can get my hands on! Especially since I knew I was having a girl and didn't have any girl clothes. Most of Gia's small clothes were hand me downs.

Re: do people ever take hand me downs of newborn/tiny baby sizes?

Most of DS's clothes are hand me downs from our nephew! I think that would be a wonderful and generous offer for friends, since they are outgrown so quickly!

DH has literally flown through sizes, so I'd be in the poor house if I bought him a full new wardrobe for each size (he's in 18 months/2T now at 6 months).

My DS's were both over 8 lbs, and barely wore any newborn things. I have a ton as well of newborn and 0-3 months - I just posted today to see if anyone knew where I can give them to get them to Haiti as I would like to donate them there.

Re: do people ever take hand me downs of newborn/tiny baby sizes?

i'm sending 2 bags to Haiti tomorrow - my coworker is getting a box to her family.

eta: I misread - I'm sending all sizes 6mos-3T (hand me downs from a friend that are off-season for my DS). I would think nb/0-3m clothes would be greatly appreciated by a local shelter

Re: do people ever take hand me downs of newborn/tiny baby sizes?

DD was really tiny, so she wore newborn for a while. A friend of mine gave me a ton of 0-3, 3-6 and 6-9 month clothes her DD barely wore or didn't even get to wear at all. I really appreciated it. I think it depends on the person. Ask around and if no one wants the clothes give them to a charity or shelter.

I kept all of DD's good clothes in case we have another girl.

DS was funny, he was over 8 lbs. at birth, but long and skinny, and his 3 month clothes swam on him. He started wearing them a few weeks after he was born, but he actually did use his newborn clothes.

I would offer them to the women you know, and ask them to donate them if they don't need them.

Re: do people ever take hand me downs of newborn/tiny baby sizes?

actually i packed all of DS stuff that he outgrew and holding it until my 2nd kid..if its a boy, then im all set. if not..then i can donate it. but we got so much stuff that he wore a few times and outgrew so fast.

our friends have been giving us their sons clothing..6mo+ stuff which has been great b/c DS is a chunker and will be able to use it soon.

So im all for paying it forward to other friends who may need it.

Re: do people ever take hand me downs of newborn/tiny baby sizes?

I wish I had NB hand me downs. My cousin convinced me I wouldn't need them, so I didn't register for any and didn't buy any on my own. Well low and behold DS was SWIMMING in 0-3 months and I had to run out when I got home and buy him a bunch of NB stuff.

So my answer is yes. For the convienence factor. Shopping 4 days PP w/ a C-section = no fun.

Re: do people ever take hand me downs of newborn/tiny baby sizes?

I would have taken hand me downs at any point, but no one I knew still had anything to give for that age range.

Although I would have accepted it, there are probably lots of people who can use the clothes more than me. We were also lucky to have generous family and friends who sent lots of clothes when DS was born.

I actually gave my infant clothes to a friend who had a co-worker who was pregnant and was in something of a financial crisis.

Re: do people ever take hand me downs of newborn/tiny baby sizes?

I was given enough clothes at my shower for 3 little girls and yet I still accepted hand me downs, but they were all 3-6 months. DD was 9lbs 2oz at birth - she never actually looked like a newborn!

A few friends had packed up some newborn stuff for me and by the time they were going to give it to me it was already too small. Chat Icon

Re: do people ever take hand me downs of newborn/tiny baby sizes?

I gave all of AJ's general nuetral clothes to a friend having a baby boy.

I swear that newborn stuff was worn MAYBE once but hardly ever more than 3times. SO much stuff. I know she used some of it and I'm glad.

Such a waste to not use something so obviously well taken care of and practically new. I wish I knew someone who could have handed stuff down to me Chat Icon

DItto....all my DS' clothes were brand new, this time with the twins I gladly accepted hand-me-downs esp for my DD.

I am saving all my DC clothes now for my sister who is pregnant with #1 and anything she doesn't use will be donated to a shelter by where she lives.

Mommas house is a shelter for teen girls who are pg. I am sure they would gladly accept donations if your friends didn't want them. Honestly, I got soo much NB stuff that I didn't need hand me downs for that size. Plus.. like others.. I was being bratty about only putting him in new stuff. Now I don't care as much.

And I save for someone I know, it's nice to be able to buy what you want for DC rather than having to alway worry about the necessary stuff.

FYI (from their site):

We are NOT in need of infant clothing at this time, but if you are having a drive or baby shower, we could use new TODDLER size clothing 2T-5T.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I boxed up a bunch of stuff (not necessarily clothing though) that I am sending to a domestic violence shelter we used to adopt at the holidays at my old job. I figure they'll take what they need at the shelter and have a better network of options of who can use the rest.
Re: do people ever take hand me downs of newborn/tiny baby sizes?
my friend gave me NB pjs and I was very thankful,they were born 2 months apart, he grew out of his so fast so she wanted to make sure I didn't waste my money buying so many newborn items since they don't get good use out of them (although joey got GREAT use, 2 months). I just went through bins of my nephews and got a TON of 0-3 month, 3-6 items, I loved it all. It really helped me. If you are going to have #2, i would lend them out to friends who would most def. be grateful (I would think). However, if you know you'll never use them again. I think at a time right now, Iw ould donate them to Haiti.
I used tons of hand me downs. I know some people feel funny about it but I would offer it to someone who is pregnant or just had a baby.
Re: do people ever take hand me downs of newborn/tiny baby sizes?
My SIL has 2 boys who are 6 and almost 5 and she has been giving me all there clothes for my DS since he was newborn, which is so appreciated. and I have since been passing them on to my neighbor as my son outgrows them (she has a 4 month old boy) so she can use them now. Since we are having a girl now, I originally had nothing, but my other SIL's niece gave me a whole bunch of her DD's clothes so that has helped (it's mostly 6 month and up though). but so far people have bought me 0-3-and 3-6 (as well as shopping myself b/c little girl clothes are so addicting LOL).
Re: do people ever take hand me downs of newborn/tiny baby sizes?
Of course!!!
My co-worker had a girl in September, and I loaned her all of DD's newborn, 0-3 and 3 month wardrobe!
Her daughter got to make use out of clothes that still had tags on them.
