Do you agree? Nap and Daycare related

I'm having a little problem with Matthew not taking an afternoon nap on the days when he is at daycare. Even on non-daycare days sometimes I really have to lay him down and almost force him to take a nap because if he doesn't then from 5:30 onward he is a mess.

I spoke to the main teacher this morning about the no nap thing and she told me that it is completely normal for them to drop one of their naps at this age.

Just as a history, he is almost 10 months old. Naps for about an hour or less between 8 and 9. And then again for an hour or two between 11 and 1. So sometimes it is the case where we get him home and he hasn't slept since noon. I know the way he is when he is around people. He is completely stimulated and really likes to just take it all in, blabber and play and doesn't show any indication sometimes of being tired even though he probably is.

I almost want to go in there tomorrow and insist that they put him down at around 3:30 or so for another short afternoon nap. Otherwise what I'm finding is that he completely has meltdowns when I get home from work at 5:30 until the time he goes down for the night. I feel like it is NOT normal for a 10 month old to drop an afternoon nap but the part of me thinks they would know better then me. Also, another thing is that they use the 1 nap criteria as a baseline for when they move him into the next steps room which they say is around 11 months. I don't know, what do you think?

I think I read that at 10 months it's about 2 naps per day still.

Christopher started daycare at 10 months and I'd say about 4 days out of 5, he only takes one nap. I think that they are so social at this age, and daycare is so interactive, that they don't want to sleep there.

And honestly, HOW are they going to force DC to take a nap? I know sometimes they put DS in his crb and he doesn't nap, just hangs out and they end up taking him out.

I'm having the same battle right now.

Funny, my DC's are 13 months old but they always take two naps a day... about 9-10:30 and 2-3 or so everyday they are home with me. Daycare doesn't put them down until 10:30-11:30 but then they take them for walks or feed them snack when my DC's would be ready for nap #2Chat Icon My DC's are not stroller nappers, they need their cribs and I told daycare that.

We have meltdowns on those afternoons as well.

ITA that they should try everything to help him nap again in the afternoon...

Can they push up the morning nap a bit that way he starts takng two longer naps?

I feel your pain, I've been over this and over this, especially when they don't understand that the golden rule of multiples is that they must be kept on the same schedule and nap/eat always at the same time or it's just constant at home.

if they put him into his crib most likely he will fall asleep. If he doesn't they won't just leave him there -- i think there is a 5 minute rule. But my hunch is that he probably would fall asleep. When I say that I force him to take a nap what I mean is that although he doesn't appear tired at that time if I lay him down he will nap even though 5 minutes before he was rolling all over the living room like a madman and babbing up a storm. So I don't "force" him per se but I just know what happens when he doesn't nap.

Literally from the second I get home lately he's a mess. Rubs his eyes, pulls his hair, scratches his face. Cries through dinner, through bath, forget about a book lately.

My DD is going to be 9 months on the 22nd , she takes 2 naps one in the morning and one around 2,3 or 4 and she is still soooo tired before her bedtime at 8-8.30 ,I def don't see her dropping one nap in a month or two.
I don't think there is anything wrong with you telling them to put the baby down for a nap at daycare, you are the mom, you pay for daycare and you know your child better than anyone. They can at least try.

Re: Do you agree? Nap and Daycare related

Emma hasn't taken an afternoon nap in daycare in several months (she's 13 months old). She used to nap in the morning and in the afternoon. Now she naps around noon with the rest of the babies. She is tired when she gets home, but she does go to bed at around 7 or so, which is fine with me. Obviously they can put him in the crib and see if he'll nap, but if he doesn't, there isn't much you can do. You have to remember, napping at daycare isn't like napping at home. There is a lot more stimulation going on there.
