Do you believe there should there be more or less than two political parties?
Sorry Everyone I hit enter before I was done with the POLL!!!
With all this talk of people not fitting the "mold" of one particular party do you think there should be more than two political parties or possibly no political parties at all?
Thoughts?

I think the two party system is flawed and people would be represented better if other parties had more of a chance, but I don't know enough to be able to propose a way to do things differently.

I mentioned this in the other thread.
There are already more than two parties out there. I don't think anything should be changed.

there are more than 2.
they just don't have a lot of popular support.
but there are many political parties in this country, and usually more than 2 on the ballot come election day.

I meant larger 3rd parties - with the financial backing to have their own conventions.
I think right now no one wants to jump ship b/c there's not a big enough presence with any other party other than the GOP and the Dems.

but the only thing that is stopping that from happening is We, the people.
I don't think it's a matter of saying, Ok, Independent party, Coca Cola is now backing you so have a convention...
I mean, Bloomburg is or was whatever, an Independent...if his money ain't helping, nothing will

Nobody is stopping the third parties from getting larger.
They aren't large because they simply... aren't popular.
As a political party, you are only going as far as your campaign donations take you.

Bloomberg isn't stupid either. When he ran, he ran as a Republican.
He only dropped his Republican status after he decided he is no longer running for political office.

Re: Do you believe there should there be more or less than two political parties?
Interesting... No one has yet to address the notion of NOT having ANY kind of political party.
Is this just a delusion of mine or does anyone else think it's possible for this country to not have specific political parties?
Why do we need them?
Can't everyone just have their platforms and those who want to support them could and those who do not wouldn't have to b/c there wouldn't be any kind of "party affiliation".

Ahh, but there's the rub. They'd actually have to come up with their own ideas. Not just rely on the usual "I'm a Republican so I'm pro-life, pro-guns, pro-big business, etc" or "I'm a Democrat so I'm pro-small government, more social programs, pro-choice, etc"
But I for one would love to see that. I'm so tired of the same old campaign promises being trotted out year after year.

Re: Do you believe there should there be more or less than two political parties?
George Wasthington said of political parties:
"It serves to distract the Public Councils, and enfeeble the Public Administration....agitates the Community with ill-founded jealousies and false alarms; kindles the animosity of one....against another....it opens the door to foreign influence and corruption...thus the policy and the will of one country are subjected to the policy and will of another."
He basically said political parties are bad news. This was in the 1700s, much hasnt changed!

Re: Do you believe there should there be more or less than two political parties?
We should do it the old way. person with the most votes is president, 2nd most votes is VP
I think people don't vote for 3rd parties, even if they want to because they don't want to spoil the election. Forexample, people might want to vote for the Green party, but won't do that because they don't want to ruin their 2nd choice, the democratic nominee.

exactly.
also, as people, we generally LIKE and have an easier time making decisions from clearly defined choices...
and the more choice you have, the harder it is to make
people need boundaries or else it's all muck and mire.

Honestly, I'd settle for muck and mire at this point!
It's gotta be better than what we've got now!

Re: Do you believe there should there be more or less than two political parties?
My dad almost ALWAYS votes 3rd parties because if they receive enough of the vote they will get federal funding like the Reps and the Dems do. I'm pretty sure he'll do it again this year based on what he's said about this race.
Usually, you can vote for the major candidates under the 3rd party ticket. If you feel strongly that there should be more than just the two heavyweights (and I do) you should try to vote under a 3rd party ticket.

Re: Do you believe there should there be more or less than two political parties?
I wish both parties weren't so beholden to special interests and corporate lobbyists. Maybe if more people registered as independents it would help, but I'm not sure. . . I'm not registered independent because I like to vote in the dem primary - but it's something I've considered.
