Re: Do you Brine YOUR turkey?

I've never cooked a whole turkey Chat Icon

We've been married for 3 years and have lived in San Diego so it was always just us for Thanksgiving (meaning I just made turkey breast)

My mom never did... so we probably wouldn't. She always buys kosher turkeys anyway, so they are already brined

I do.
I find the bird comes out juicy and has more flavor.

What does "brine" mean?

Its kind of like Pickling the turkey, letting it sit in salted water and herbs for a while, then cooking it in the oven.

Ohhhh. Thanks for replying. I never heard of that so obviously I don't do that! lol

I also know my mom doesn't do it and the turkey is always yummy!

We do.

You are supposed to rinse the bird off before cooking; the brine is to keep the inside moist, so rinsing it off isn't a big deal. He probably forgot to rinse it.

DH brined our turkey last year using the brine from William Sonoma..and it was awesome!! The best turkey ever. Very juicey. Not salty.
So many compliments on it. And it was very easy.

Re: Do you Brine YOUR turkey?

DH decided he wanted to make the turkey one year because of a "Good Eats" episode on Thanksgiving. Alton Brown brined his turkey so he brined ours. It was delicious, but it was quite a production.

Re: Do you Brine YOUR turkey?

How long do you brine it for? I never brined anything.. I think this year we're probably roasting cornish hens.. for a change.. everyone gets to "carve" their own..

eta: can we brine the hens? or too small to do so?
