Do you check work email at night/weekend?

I am just wondering if the job I want doesn't exist....so I'm curious, how many of you check work email at night, on weekends and holidays (either one or more of the above)? And does your company pay for your phone?

I was always of the mindset that if the company isn't paying for my phone (or at least contributing to the bill) then I'm not expected to be reachable 24/7. However, my boss got very upset with me and a co-worker for putting an out of office on during a national holiday. She told us the next day she expects us to check daily.

I'm wondering if it's just me. I put in my full 8 hours and go home. If there's a reason to check email at night or on the weekends I always would, but never did I check just for the sake of checking unless the company I was with was paying for a blackberry.

Yes - I check my email on nights, vacation and PTO. I'm expected to be reachable at all times, as are many of my friends who work for different organizations.

My company does contribute towards my phone though.

I check because I work 2 days a week and want to be up to date. Otherwise I would spend a lot of time reading emails at work.

Does not contribute to my phone bill and I check my email and respond to that and text messages even on vacation.

Yep I check on my computer, phone or ipad. I rarely answer though unless it is something that is urgent and I know off the top of my head without looking it up.

I have a phone, iPad and laptop from work. I am not really expected to, but I do check my email at least once a day if I'm off, at least once a night after work, and usually first thing in the morning when I get up. No one would give me a hard time if I didn't, it's more my own thing, just in case something happens, I want to know about it. I always put on my "out of office" response when I am off, even though I will most likely check in anyway - that way, people will know not to expect to reach me and will not expect a quick (or any) response that day.

I'm expected to however it's an expectation- It's not in my job description as a requirement nor do they pay for my phone therefore if they call me after hours I don't pick up even if it's multiple times in an emergency- oh well I'm not on the clock I work over an hour away from work there's nothing I can do. I have made it known and for the most part it has subsided. I also don't check my email at home they get annoyed but can't say anything because it's not part of my job responsibility. The moment I clock out don't ask me to do anything my time is my time for me and my family and I refuse to let work interfere. Not worth it. When I'm on vacation I do put out of office on this includes holidays

No.
I used to for many years, even take care of emergencies while on vacation.
But it was not appreciated for promotions or merit raises so I stopped. Work stops when I leave the office.

Not really. I used to, but it's not required. I went away for 2 weeks & was unreachable, so since then I've let go.

If there is a reason, I will say that I will check my email--like if my boss is on vacation & I have a dr. apt,
my bosses do have my # to text me though, but they would only do than in an emergency.

In my husband's dept, 4 people take turns being on call, so for 1 week a month & 2-3 holidays a year, he has to be reachable 24/7, but he has a work phone for that & they do get paid extra those days.

Being expected to be reachable on holidays is not the norm.

No, I do not but I did check at least twice a week while I was home on maternity leave so that my emails did not build up. But like someone said I don't get paid nearly enough to check all the time.... At my old job though before I switched careers they had given us a blackberry (this was circa 2007) and yes I did have to check it while not in work.

Yes - I have a company phone and am expected to check periodically. If my boss has an emergency I am expected to be available.

Yes, I do. On a work issued laptop or phone, both of which I have.

No. I used to but then realized i get sucked in to doing work when im off. I dont volunteer there sorry
