Do you consider 'da da da' or 'ma ma ma' first words?
I personally don't, because they're indiscriminate sounds she makes.

Re: Do you consider 'da da da' or 'ma ma ma' first words?
For my child, no, because I know they were just sounds, not anything to do with me or his dad. But I think its great if other people want to consider them their first words!
My friends son says ROBOT. Thats all he says! Robot. Now thats a first word!

I have to agree. Christopher did say Mama and Dada, but I considered "light" to be his true first word.

While it wasn't his first word, "Hemi" was in the top few....
For anyone who doesn't get the reference, several years ago, there was a commercial for Dodge where Dad was holding his little boy by the engine of his new truck and said Dad:"Can you say Hemi?"... DS:"Hemi"....Dad:"That's my boy."

That's what I'm waiting for. Right now DD can say dadada for hours but I know she is not referring to anyone yet she just likes saying it.

When they point to something & say the word, yes. When it's babbling, no.
I got flack from the grandma patrol after Joseph pointed to the ball & say "Bah!" They said "He said Ball!" and I'm thinking...um, no he said 'bah', not ball.

I consider it a first word. It is a word. DS does it. Anytime anyone hears him saying mamamma or dadada...they're always like "awwwwwww he's saying mama" or "awwww he's saying dada" It counts for me...

Re: Do you consider 'da da da' or 'ma ma ma' first words?
I think its still a "word" since they have learned to form something intelligible and will be the start of learning how to speak. Pointing to an object and recognizing what it is is a different skill IMO. Drew's baby book has a stciker for "says Da Da" and "says MaMa" so I'm considering it his first "word".
The first thing my DD learned to recognize and say was "ice". So for a while everything she drank was "ice". That was cute too!!

I agree with this, those are just sounds to me unless its clear that he was calling me.

I have to agree with this. It's not a word until you assign meaning to it, as far as I'm concerned.

I totally agree with you girls. Hannah does say "ba" and "ma" now, but they are just sounds she's making.

DS is constantly babbling babababa...dadadadada..mamamamama
I do not consider those his first words because he says them randomly through out the day. When he looks at me and says Mamam..then I will consider that his first word

Re: Do you consider 'da da da' or 'ma ma ma' first words?
I feel if they repeat them again after you repeat them, they are aware that there is communicative intent behind those sounds. If you reinforce any sound enough, it becomes language... so yes, I would consider them words if that were the case...

Exactly. That's how they learn. They have to practice saying it. Even if it sounds like babble. My 20 month old nephew says a bunch of words and doesn't know the meaning of them, so is that now considered babble or talking. He says the words that he knows very clear...
