Do you do regular maintenance on your car?

I have an '08 and never got anything done except oil changes.

Honda service looked at me like I was nuts and recc'd I get the 15k service.

I spent over 400 on it today and am sick. (well, it included an oil change & inspection)

but still..is this necessary - all the maintenance? it seems so costly..i feel i get emails all the time on service reminders.

thoughts?

I have an 08 Honda Accord.

I never get their 'recommended' packages. Most of the packages could be done cheaper seperately and most of the components are just fluff. IMO they are just glorified oil changes plus check 15 fluids and change 2 filters.

They told us some air filter needed to be changed and it would be 90 bucks. We declined. We went home and bought a certified honda part off the internet for 15 dollars with shipping and changed it ourselves. Didn't even need to open the hood, it gets changed in the glove box.

I do make sure that I get the oil changes on time and tire rotation about once a year.

If it included an inspection (IIRC, isn't that $125 alone?) then I don't think it is too bad.

DH is a mechanic (as his side job) so he does all of the matienance and repairs on our four cars

I do it. I hate how expensive it is, but I drive a lot (35+ miles each way for work) and I want to keep my car in the best possible working condition.

Re: Do you do regular maintenance on your car?

Every 3000 miles I get a service. I have a Mercury.

Tires rotated, oil change, fluids checked/added, etc. etc.

I have a '99 Nissan pick-up truck. I do oil changes at about 7,000 miles, had it tuned up a few times and that's about it. I never took it to the dealer for anything, my Dad does my brakes for me.

Re: Do you do regular maintenance on your car?

I have an '06 CTS that I don't drive that much because I commute to the city, but I do change the oil at least once a year instead of every 5k miles and have the tires rotated.
I finally did the 15k service, even though I only have 11.5k on the car.
Now I need a wheel alignment. Darn potholes.

I think inspection is about 40 dollars - you might be thinking of registration which is about 125 bucks.

This is the recommended Honda maintenance for 30K miles:

Engine oil and filter - replace
Fluid levels - top off all
Lube hinges, locks, latches, and hood cable
Front / Rear brakes - visual inspection
Transmission fluid - drain & refill
Lights - check operation
Clutch - adjust if applicable
Battery posts - inspect & clean
Fuel lines, tank, lines & connections - inspect
Adjust valve clearance if applicable
Tires - balance rear tires and rotate to front; adjust pressure & inspect tire wear pattern
Coolant system - Inspect & test protection
Wiper blades - check operation & wear
Park brake - adjust & lube as needed
Air filter - inspect
Exhaust system - inspect
Suspension mounting bolts - inspect

Last week I used a Honda coupon for tire rotation, oil change, filter, brake check, check cooling system and top off fluids for 80 dollars.

So it seems they want an additional 320 bucks to check lights, lube up my doors, balance my tires and check my wiper blades. No thanks. I could do half that stuff myself!

Yes, but only because my DH keeps up with it since he's in that line of work.

Re: Do you do regular maintenance on your car?

we have a 2005 Toyota matrix. we get the oil changes done regularly, and the transmission fluids/filters etc. done as well.

we just had our inspection and our brakes needed to be done. $300 later but i guess thats not terrible for an inspection and brake work. we hadnt changed the brakes since bought the car in 2007.

knock wood i havent had to have any major repairs yet (except for the computer engine but that was covered under toyota's warranty).

Re: Do you do regular maintenance on your car?

Honestly on todays cars, they are maintenance free for 100k miles. I used to work for a ford dealer and also a vw, audi, porsche dealer and even the service department staff said that the services werent necessary, but they werent going to tel the consumers that because they work on commissions. I only bring Danielle's truck to the dealership if there are recalls, warranty work, and an inspection. Other than that, it is never there. I would never do any of their services, because they are a rip off.

We both get regular oil changes and our yearly inspections.

Today, I got my car inspected and the rear breaks and routers were shot. $370 later.

yep. my Dad was always so anal about his cars growing up...it rubbed off on me so I am really diligent about keeping up with regular services.
