I know I got a crown on my root canal --not too sure about the gum scraping thing? My dentist is great, though...takes whatever my insurance pays.

Re: Do you ever feel like you are getting ripped off by your dentist?
Our new Dentist is like that. She's always looking to sell something. Then the last time I went in I met with the other Dentist in the office and guess what...those little things weren't even suggested.
Ugh...

Re: Do you ever feel like you are getting ripped off by your dentist?
I don't at all. I love my dentist and I never feel like he's trying to make money from me. He always tries to avoid the big and costly procedures. I had a root canal once and he said in all likelyhood I would eventually need a cap, but not at the moment, so we decided against it. Also, my mouth is too small for my teeth, and as my wisdom teeth are slowly coming in I got a few infections, but isnteaf of extracting all 4 teeth, which he said I might also decide I need down the line, he's been helping me prevent infection, so I may not have to extract the teeth, even though he'd make a lot of money.
I LOVE my dentist SO much!

Re: Do you ever feel like you are getting ripped off by your dentist?
um yeah....ask me how old I was when I first visited a dentist
I had to lie b/c I was so embarassed. My grandmother convinced my mom, that dentists poke holes in kids teeth to say they have cavities -- I think that is a little extreme - but she believed it
but 29 years old and no cavities!

Re: Do you ever feel like you are getting ripped off by your dentist?
OMG yes, I had a hurty tooth and I went to the dentist and had to have 2 visits and a set of x-rays, all costing around $150 ( I don't have dental insurance) to be told by the dentist that my teeth look really good and I just need a cleaning!
Thanks for nothing!

Re: Do you ever feel like you are getting ripped off by your dentist?
when i first moved to NYC I went to a new dentist that I randomally chose. They told me I had two cavities which I knew was a pure LIE b/c I have no cavities and nothing wrong with my teeth at all, so I got a second opinion and never mentioned the cavity diagnosis of the first dentist.....so far no cavities.
So yes...I def think they lie!

Re: Do you ever feel like you are getting ripped off by your dentist?
Definitely get a second opinion Mel. Some dentists are the BIGGEST crooks, that's how they make their money.
I've had one of those and when I went for a second opinion they said all the work my previous dentist wanted to do was not necessary at all and was just an easy way for him to make money.

Re: Do you ever feel like you are getting ripped off by your dentist?
The gum scraping "thing" (cause I am not sure of the name either ) is real. If you don't brush your gums and just your teeth then your gums get puffy or infected. My dentist had to reteach me how to brush my teeth so I included the gums.
eta: As for the overcharging...I could care less how much he charges b/c he is located downstairs.

Re: Do you ever feel like you are getting ripped off by your dentist?
Mine tries to upsell me on things like electric toothbrushes and the like. But when it comes to doing work, I draw the line because we don't have insurance. Nothing gets done with out me seeing the x-ray and getting a good reason.
BUt I will say that I never heard of having a root canal and NOT getting a cap/crown. Taking the root out really weakend the tooth and it need to be built up with a post and crown/cap.

My dentist threatened me with it but I changed my brushing habits and I don't need it anymore. GL

Re: Do you ever feel like you are getting ripped off by your dentist?
no, I am "boring" as my Dentist says it. I haven't had so much as a cavity since I was 13
BUT, a regular Doc, yes! they always try and send me to get lab work done that IMO is NOT necessary

Re: Do you ever feel like you are getting ripped off by your dentist?
Mine actually saved me a couple of bucks. I went to him to get a lot of cosmetic stuff done on my front teeth and just assumed I'd have to pay for it all. But since I had an old root canal that I needed the crown for (because over the years it had dulled the front of the tooth), he got some of it covered under insurance.
After going to him, I'm no longer afraid to go to the dentist. Some of the stuff with the crowns hurt, don't get me wrong, but no more than it had to.
FM me if you want the info, he's in Massapequa.

Yup, I've had this done before, years ago when I was a kid, I was on the verge of gingivis! From what I remember, they numb you up for this, so it doesn't hurt. But, I don't know what the practices are these days. For some odd reason I don't mind the dentist, nothing really hurts when they are working in my mouth.

I had it done recently. You get numbed up pretty well, so you don't feel it. For me, the worst part was getting the novacaine shot near the front of my mouth. I cried, and I have NEVER cried during any medical/dental procedure. Though it felt more like a reflex- the tears just popped out of my eye (the one on the side where I was getting the shot).
Once that was over, the worst part was hearing the hygenist scrape- I hate that sound. If I was smart, I would have asked if it was ok to use my mp3 player.
It was miserable, but worth it. I can see the difference in my gums. I have terrible teeth, never flossed as much as I should have, and was in danger of losing teeth. (Which 2 different dentists from 2 different practices told me.)

Re: Do you ever feel like you are getting ripped off by your dentist?
I've worked for a dentist while in college...I know all the tricks in the book now and would never let another dentist rip me off...there's a lot of ways to make money off the patients...
One thing I can tell you though is that you can tell if you need a root canal or not just by looking at the x-rays. Always have a dentist explain everything to you and they should put you at ease by explaining things to you not make you more confused. As far as the crowns go, it depends the location of the tooth and the damage done to the tooth that would require a crown. Most of the time while performing a root canal, the drilling causes a large hole which can only be covered by a crown.
If you're ever in doubt please dont hesitate to FM me.
