Do you ever feel like you sometimes you are too nice...
and people take advantage of you big time because they know you are.
I REALLY need to learn how to be assertive and SAY NO!!!!
Why is this such a problem for me!????

what dave has taught me...(not saying he's not nice, but i go broke buying and doing things for others and always worry about me LAST)....
if that person you're about to do/buy that for saw something and thought of you - would THEY get it or DO IT??
that helps just a tiny bit...

Yes! And it's heartbreaking to see how fast some can turn on you when you say no or don't give in like usual.
But I've learned to step back ans stop being a doormat...made it easy to see who my real friends are

Absolutely not.
I don't mind helping any friend out--but I don't like being taken advantage of and I have no problem saying no if I feel that way. If you don't say no sometimes--you will wind up resenting people!

i saw a list of great ways to say no without saying NO... well, basically you are saying no but it doesn't sound like it and it is a great resource for someone really nice who just has trouble telling people they can't for whatever reason.
i think it was in a magazine... things like:
-i would love to but i really can't.
-i'd like to say yes but i just can't commit to that right now
-now is just not a good time for me
-maybe i can devote some time to that later but right now i have too much on my plate.
stuff like that.

I have used advice like that but I also like to make it totally clear that I am saying no. Usually, at some point in the conversation I will say, "I'm sorry."

Yes, I always feel that I am too nice and then I feel guilty when I say no. I have always been like this and would love to be able to say no and not think twice about it or wonder if Ive offended anyone or hurt their feelings.

I used to be like that. And I used to resent people who would take and take and take but never give. Or who expected everyone to help them, as if they had earned the right that I somehow didn't.
Then I heard something one day... "No one can take advantage of you without your permission."
I started trying out various ways of saying no. Many people were upset, especially at work I got "You always did it before, what happened?" But it got easier over time.
Now I am the complete opposite. I'm successful in every area except with immediate family, I have a harder time with them.

i hear you! i am learning how to say NO. there is a nice way to do it and I am learning that saying no doesn't have to mean i have to feel bad.
