I find it sad, actually. Maybe it's my many, many years of Catholic school, but the word God doesn't make me uncomfortable. Hearing "God bless you" or "have a blessed day" doesn't make me uncomfortable. Talking about God doesn't make me uncomfortable. It shouldn't!
Don't get me wrong, I'm all about separation of church and state and freedom of religion (including freedom to not associate with any religion or believe in a god or gods at all)... but it still saddens me that people who DO believe in God are uncomfortable talking about it.
I have nothing but respect for people who do NOT believe in God. However, that doesn't mean that I need to act as if I also don't believe in God. (Sorry - tangent...)
ITA
ITA! it's sad... we have become so PC that people that do believe in God are now afraid to talk about it....

I was actually thinking about this. I am Jewish, I believe in G-d, yet if someone said "G-d bless" to me, it always catches me off guard. I certainly don't think of it as a bad thing, but I guess b/c I don't generally speak like that, and most people I know don't speak like that, it startles me.
I've ALWAYS wondered this....
why do Jewish people never spell the word God when they write it? it's always written as G-d. Why?

As the lone Jew in the land of Catholics (NC) I have learned to embrass all sayings with "g-d" and "jesus". I know that the NC people do not have evil intentions so I usually say "Thank you" and move on. Bless your heart, G-d bless, Praise Jesus, yada yada...it is all good to me.
As a fellow NC resident. SO TRUE. I am in fact agnostic and just say thanks and move along. In the land of the Baptists, thats all you can do. Im WAY out numbered.
There are no Baptists in N. Charlotte. Catholic churches, Catholic schools and Catholic cemetarys.

I'm sure someone else could explain this better than me, including the biblical origins, but basically, we are not supposed to destroy anything with G-d's name on it. So, if you write it on a piece of paper, you are not supposed to cross out the name, get rid of the paper, etc. Writing "G-d" is a way to get around that.

but when people use the word "God" to us, we are uncomfortable with it.
(I include myself in this) I just think it's so weird. one would think the opposite were true no...since most of us are of monotheistic religions...that God wouldn't be a "bad" word...
My two cents.. From a non religious person's point of view, I do feel slightly uncomfortable when people talk about god like its an absolute given - whether jewish, christian or any religious faith. To me, its more like talking about a fairy tale, and i always end up feeling vaguely unsettled.
This is how I feel. Do you consider yourself an atheist?
more an agnostic.. because i feel like i don't absolutely know there is no God, and don't have proof of it either way so i don't feel i can say with certainty one way or the other. Religion just doesn't play a part in my life.
That's what I believe. DH is an atheist and often uses the fairy tale comment as well, that's why I asked

I'm glad someone else feels this way. I just sometimes feel alone in this, thinking is it wrong that religion doesn't play a role in my life? Should it? I know it doesn't have to, but it is nice to see I'm not alone.
Religion should only play a role if YOU want it to.. I feel like its such a personal choice and its ok to question what you want out of your life. To me.. the whole thing just doesn't make much sense, so i don't spend a lot of time thinking about it.

I am Jewish but the word G-d does not make me feel uncomfortable at all.
Also, most of my friends are Catholic; many are African American and Puerto Rican so I am always hearing "G-d bless you" and "Have a blessed day"
Being pregnant many of my friends also put their hands on my belly and say "G-d bless this baby"
It doesnt bother me at all - I actually like it! I mean, it doesnt matter which g-d you believe in, just that a higher power should be watching over us

Do you know, I had absolutely no idea that Jewish people don't say God Bless You. That's good to know in situations. I thought it was kind of universal for those that believe in God. Man, am I sheltered Thanks for posting this!
this is not true at all they do say it; but the Jewish people that say it are very religious and say it in Hebrew

jews dont say God bless you as a regular course of conversation with non-jews. .
is there a particular reason or custom around this?
is it bad for a non jew to say it to a jew?
I dont think it is bad at all my friends say it to me all the ti me
the reason or custom in my opinion is this
you have reform jews and then you have much more religious jews just like there are christians that go to church every sunday; and those that go on xmas and easter
now, my friends that go on xmas and easter, do not say "g-d bless you" in their regular conversations; however, my friends that go to church every week DO. one of my co-workers says it to me when she goes home every day. she is a more religious person so, i think it just depends on how much g-d is in your own life, as to whether or not you say it to other people
