Do you get insulted when someone calls you "kid"?
I have this dweeb (in his 4o's perhaps) that works in my office. Every morning he comes in & says "good morning kid". I cant even tell you how much this irks me to no end. I cringe when he says it. Its even gotten to a point where I dont even answer him back.
Should I answer him "Good morning old man?" I'm not one to kindly ask him to stop. I would just rather bash him over his head with my stapler.

i love this reply!
DH and i call each other "kid" sometimes, and there's a woman in my office who calls me "little girl" but i love her so i don't mind it at all.
however, when one of our 50+ year old supervisors calls me "babe" i have a problem. next time he does that i am going to call him "sweet cheeks."

Re: Do you get insulted when someone calls you "kid"?
if he's in his 40s I would be a little creeped out... Not sure, depends on his (or her) personality and my relationship with them
but i see it as a term of endearment. I work with a few seniors and i think it's cute when they call me kid.

Re: Do you get insulted when someone calls you "kid"?
I have a coworker that calls me Kid sometimes and he is only in his thirties.
I doesn't bother me that much - but he only says it once in a while.

Re: Do you get insulted when someone calls you "kid"?
I always say have a good day kids, when leaving my office, even though some of them are older than me. I don't mean it that way.
Though I hate being called "young lady" when I go to Starbucks or to order lunch.

Re: Do you get insulted when someone calls you "kid"?
In a professional setting, it would bother me having someone call me ANY pet name every day. I think it's entirely inappropriate and unprofessional. More importantly, though, it obviously bothers YOU.
I'd not hesitate to say something to him -- however you feel is appropriate. I'd say something like "If you don't stop calling me kid, I'll have to start calling you 'old man'" or "Please call me by my first name. I save the pet names for my husband."
If that doesn't stop him, then approach him more seriously about it.
Maybe I'm touchy on this b/c I've been treated differently at work because I look young - NOTE not b/c I'm inexperienced (I'm not). My brother has a baby face, and while it's flattering to look young, it's frustrating when people don't take you seriously b/c you look young or are young. I'm sure he means no harm, but it's not how I want to be treated in my work environment.

Re: Do you get insulted when someone calls you "kid"?
Is he saying it in a condesending way? If not, maybe it's just his way. (Dumb way ... but his way.) Personally, I'd probably just blow it off.
(I had a boss years ago that used to call me anything but my name ... Honey, Sweetheart, Darling, Babe, Doll ... Etc ... And the List Goes On. My point is that some people think they are being "cute". I just used to blow it off and go on with the day.)

Re: Do you get insulted when someone calls you "kid"?
It would offend me, but that's because I get a lot of crap for being so young. In one of my old companies, I worked with them since I was 18 so they had a tremendous level fo respect for me because of what I accomplished for them. One year for my birthday, the CEO refused to believe how old I was. Now, I'm at a new company. They seem to have a lot of respect for what I have accomplished and what I'm capable of. But I hear at least once a day a comment about how young I am. Usually it's just a joke because they'll be referring to an old show I won't know or I'll say somethign about babies and they tell em to wait because I'm still a baby. So sick of it. I may be 24 but I have accomplished more than some twice my age and I am capable of more. If I can provide for and love a baby, what does it matter how old I am?
Sorry, that was a little rant.

it drives me nuts when my mil calls me and dh "the kids." i am not her child and dh is 28, far from kids.
but i don't think she is trying to insult us, she just doesn't know what else to call us.

Re: Do you get insulted when someone calls you "kid"?
We have one person on our team that is about 15 years older than the rest of the team. He started addressing all of us by saying "Good morning Children". Last week, I responded "Good morning, Grandpa Mike".

See now this is insulting but to say "what's going on kids" or "how's it going kid" seems friendly and harmless.
Agreed. But we don't like Grandpa Mike anyway so anytime we have a chance to insult him, we are happy.
