Do you get your dog his/her shots every year?
I have had Luca for 5 yrs and i got him his shots every Feb. In Feb 06, he got REALLY sick from them and really "blah". Vet said that bc he is small, it was too much for him , so for 07, they would give his shots a few wks apart from each other.
I remb reading on here i think that dogs really dont need these shots yearly, but more so, every 2 yrs. So i didnt go in 07.
Here it is 08, 2 yrs since last shots, and i REALLY do NOT wanna take him. The bill is a small fortune and i hate the way Luca gets from them. Not to mention, Luca is an indoor dog. I live in a co-op and do not have a yard, he doesnt play outside EVER.
So.... do you get your doggie his/her shots? Our last dog lived to 17 yrs and she NEVER ONCE went to a vet!!!

I get my dogs shots every year. I would not go without getting them done. It sometimes helps them out in the long run.

Re: Do you get your dog his/her shots every year?
When it was just me & Hershey living in an apt in Queens, she never had shots (other than whatever they gave her before leaving NSAL). And I think I took her to the vet maybe twice in six years because once she had some sort of allergic reaction and once she had a weird crusty thing going on in her ear.
Once she started coming out here to the "country" (lol) and was in the company of another dog (who did get shots) on a regular basis, she started getting all the recommended shots annually.

Re: Do you get your dog his/her shots every year?
hmmmm - i dunno.
for us, we take char and just get them done spread out b/c, like you, the first time i took her they did it all in one swoop and she didn't eat for like DAYS on end - i was worried sick - it was horrible - she, you could tell, felt like shiiit - i was so sad. i wished they would have given me a choice! they asked me if i wanted to do them all in one shot and i said yes b/c i thought they were asking me b/c the price would be a lot - but since we don't pay for our vet bills i said yeah no prob - go ahead. little did i know they were asking b/c they can get so sick! why didn't she clarify??
anywho - i would be too nervous to not get her the shots so this year i'm going to get them spread out - i don't care if i have to go back five times - whatever will make her comfortable.
but i really don't know if you can go without doing them - i would be too nervous with char if something happened and she got sick - i'm not sure what the risks of not getting them could be.

The first rabie vaccine is one year. Aterwards, it is every three years. Most vets do not practice such but you can insist. When a dog has reached adulthood and has been vaccinated several times against parvo/distemper it is unlikely he/she will come down with such. Whether you choose to vacinate or not, it is important that your dog/cat or whatever your pet may be visit a vet once a year. Yearly physicals is the best preventive medicine against illness.

My vet usually does them a couple of weeks apart. We have never gotten them all at the same time.

Re: Do you get your dog his/her shots every year?
Always vaccinate your pet against rabies. It is the law. If your pet should bite someone and it is not up to date with rabie vaccine you may be required to quarantine your pet for up to six months at a vet. That can be quite expensive. Bite cases become Department of Health matters. If you live in an area where there are raccoons or other wild animals pets must be proected against rabies. If you live in NYC go to the NYC Department of Health website..it lists how many animals have been diagnosed with rabies in the five boroughs. Not sure how you would secure that information if you live in Nassau or Suffolk counties.

Re: Do you get your dog his/her shots every year?
My dogs go for a "check up" once and year and they get the shots that are needed. My vet does their rabies shot every 2 or 3 years.

Misty gets all her shots every year...she spends a lot of time in parks and woods and I feel better knowing she is protected.

Re: Do you get your dog his/her shots every year?
Yearly the animals get boosters or routine shots. Our vet sends a reminder postcard. Gus also gets boardatela(?) because he goes to the "puppy spa" (kennel) once a year while we go on vacation for 2 days until my mom can get him.

Re: Do you get your dog his/her shots every year?
Myt vet checks my dog's titers to whatever ones he can, to see if the dog needs the booster. I like this approach, don't recall if it works for all vaccines. Otherwise, i do take my dogs every year and just trust my vet's choice.

Re: Do you get your dog his/her shots every year?
I understand how you feel. Denver had a bad reaction to lepto a few weeks ago so I worry. However, the only shot my dogs get annually is lepto. Rabies and the others are done every 3 years. Maybe we can talk to your vet about spreading them out? Good luck

I feel the same ay you do. I havent got his in a year or so because when I bring him in they charge me for a million things. and the bill is enormous and I dont feel that he needs them since he is mainly inside.

Re: Do you get your dog his/her shots every year?
I have a pug, so he's small and my vet recommends every other year, so that's what we did and he seems fine. He also goes out to pee and that's it, he doesn't like to be outside at all.
The lady next door to me, has had several goldens. Every single one died from one kind of a cancer or another. She thought that it was due to the shots. The last one she got, she did not give him any of his shots (not even rabies which I believe is illegal not to in NY) and he got cancer as well. But nothing else. He was healthy his whole life, she walked him everyday, he went outside and play a lot, and never got anything. SO sometimes I wonder.
I'm just to scarred not to. My dog is my baby, and I would hate myself if he got something and it was my fault.

Every single year. It comes out to about 600.00 for the two of them, but I still make sure I do it.
