Because you're married, thats why. And a big part of that, is helping each other out. My husband helped pay off my debt because he didnt want my credit the be shot when we went to buy a house.

I know "you never know what could happen", but I would not feel right having a "just in case we split" account.

The never know what could happen is not a "just in case we split" account, it's for emergency situations that may occur.

As an example, my parents joint account was locked for a couple of days b.c. my father was the primary name on the account when he died. It wasn't a huge deal to correct but not what needed attention at the moment.

I pay the rent and my car payment; DH pays everything else. Even my cellphone bill, all utilities, etc. At the end of the month, he has more money leftover than I do (he gets paid more) so he's the one putting money in our savings account.

If we come into some extra money from a bonus, raise, tax return, we decide what to do with it. Once we paid off all my debt, and another time we paid down his school loan.

We have joint savings and joint checking. I agree with you Kristen. It is "our" money and it goes into "our" account.
When we went to our premarital counseling with our Pastor he actually said our money should be together as we are together.Chat Icon

We have both. We like to keep seperate accounts also for special occasions and vacation funds. This works for us.

Re: Do you have separate bank accounts?

We have everything separate. Only joint things we have are a marriage license and our car insuranceChat Icon For us, everything is kept separate for child support issues. But once those issues are done, we'll probably still keep it separate because it works for us, its easier for us. We know that both our salaries are our money and anything we have is ours. Chat Icon

For those who said yes, any reason why?

We share bank accounts.

Until recently, that was fine with me- and it wasn't anything that DH did that changed my mind.

When we got engaged, I added him to my checking and savings, so they were both joint accounts. No one person was "primary" or "secondary" as far as I was told. It was my understanding that we are both able to handle any issue that arises.

A few weeks ago the bank called and asked to speak to DH about some issue. They REFUSED to speak with me about OUR account. The woman claimed that since only his name comes up on th screen when she makes calls, he is the only one she can speak to, even though it is a joint account.

They had some fecking balls to automatically put him as the only one who can handle the money issues, especially since it was MY account to begin with.

I am shopping for another bank.

Re: Do you have separate bank accounts?

We each have individual savings and checking as well as a joint checking.

Bills get paid out of the joint to which we each contribute a certain amt automatically from each paycheck. The leftover money in our personal accounts is our own money to do with what we please.

Why? It works for us. Our personal accounts are definitely not "just in case we split accounts". I actually think it prevents alot of money arguments.

We still have the mentality that all of our money is "our" money. It's just the way we choose to manage it. Chat Icon

Re: Do you have separate bank accounts?

for me its not a "just in case split up account'"- I want my own identity in that aspect. We are joint in everything else monetary the house the cars the bills, just b/c you get married doesnt mean you have to do everything joint financially. and I'll tell you we NEVER fight over money either. and yes we help eachother pay off loans as well, its not well this is mine and yours. In our eyes its joint on paper its separate.

Re: Do you have separate bank accounts?

We have both -- we never even use the joint account really. It is just to make it easier for me since I sometimes have to deposit checks for him. This way I can do all my banking in WaMu.

We don't have any debt so it isn't an issue.

Nothing is a "what if" account... I have a few accounts and so does he. That's just how it was when we met, no need to change it.

Re: Do you have separate bank accounts?

We have personal checking accounts.
We have a joint checking and a joint ING savings account.
I also have a personal ING account.

I like having my own account. I've had it since I've had my first job. I can't bear to part with it. Even if I just had $100 in it.
I also like to feel like I'm buying him a gift, rather than he is buying his own gift. Does that make sense?

Both...

We have our joint acct and our seperate accts.
It works now...until we buy a home. At that time he'll close his.

We each have our own savings & checking acct and our joint savings & checking.

Like I mentioned in my original post it just works for us now. When we start considering buying a house we plan on combining most of it then. I will still keep my checking and savings with my CU because I can get MUCH better "deals" etc through them then we can with any bank. The only reason why we don't put everything into the CU is that it's upstate and it makes it very difficult to get money without having to pay a fee each time we use the ATM.
My money is his money and his money is my money. We definitely don't have things seperated for any reason...just that it works for us for now.
