Do you have to change your filing status with your job
when you get married? If so, Isn't the HR department responsible for giving you a W4 form to update and return to them? Can someone explain how this works? TIA

yeah try telling my HR that 
i am changing mine after the new year - we were only married in october so we are filing separately this year.

You can change it but I don't think you have to. You can download the W-4 from the IRS website or just ask HR for one if you want to change it. You will have slightly less tax withheld if you change your status to married.

You do not have to change it. You will get more money in your check if you file married instead of single but you do not have to change it. You will get more back at the end of the year if you continue to file single. I am 99% positive you are not required to change it. I know I never did and it was fine.
Not sure how your company works but it has always been the responsibility of the person that has the status change to request these forms from HR or payroll. Hope that helps.

I agree with the OP that you do not *have* to change your filing status once you get married. DH and I kept ours as single last year, but at tax time filed jointly and got a very nice return. You are taxed more heavily for each paycheck if you keep it at single.
If you want to switch to married, there is a W-4 form that is very easy to fill out. Your HR department probably has it.
I used this website (for 2007) to determine what the difference in my paycheck would be if I switched to married.

There is a "married, but withhold at higher single rate" category on the W-4 form. This is the option both DH and I chose after we got married. His company told him he had to change his status.
You will HAVE to file married (jointly or separately) if you are married as of Dec 31st. The IRS considers you married for the entire year.
