Do you know anyone that did selective reduction
I've been thinking about this more and more. I don't know if I could.
I'm not asking for opinions about it but of course post whatever you want, but just real life experiences and how they had it happen.
It's got to be the hardest choice of all after going through IVF.

Re: Do you know anyone that did selective reduction
I don't know someone personally, but my cousin's friend did it. She had 3 and had to reduce to 2 b/c of her health and that of the babies. They told her there was no way all 3 would make it.

I always thought the risks were higher for IUI than IVF...

Re: Do you know anyone that did selective reduction
I used to be a member.
I don't think I am really in danger of having it happen at my age but the IVF nurse I spoke to yesterday said there is a higher chance of women over 40 having twins. It made me think about it more. If I can have twins, then younger women can have more.
If I'm lucky enough to have 5 to transfer, they will put back 5. Holy yikes man!
I think DH is petrified of 2 let alone 3!

Re: Do you know anyone that did selective reduction
This is why we chose to only transfer 2. (The office suggests someone my age transferring 3). I know I couldn't reduce if all three took.

I don't know your age..but i am 40..I will be having IVF this month...we will be putting back 4, God willing. All 3 doctors told me the risk of triplets was less than .5%, the risk of quads wasn't worth discussing.

I'm 41 and holding We talked about 5 but that's best case scenario of course. We talked about twins of 5%. Triplets wasn't worth discussing. As I go through my cycle I will know better my odds of conceiving at all. Right now I'm at 20% which of course means that 80% not in my favor.
I'm just thinking about the what ifs. I know I'm way ahead of myself but since I'm older the docs are more aggressive with me to give me the best chance.

Re: Do you know anyone that did selective reduction
Just so you know, I have done 10 transfers of 6 embies each...and only gotten PG once. The chance of more than one embie out of five being good at our age (I was 42 at conception) is extremely slim.

Oh yeah, I know the reality, it just seems like a lot of embryos! It's a bit scary.
My cousin trasnferred a total of 24 and only one took out of 4 cycles. She was 41 at conception.
I'm a what if person..I like to think about all scenarios. When the IVF nurse said that women over 40 actually have an increased risk of twins (risk being the word she used), it got me thinking.

Re: Do you know anyone that did selective reduction
I'm doing IVF this month and because of my age (33), they will only put back two.
My cousin-in-law's friend has triplets. She was pregnant with quads (IUI) and went to reduce. I was told she watched it on a sono and witnessed the heart stop beating. She couldn't do anymore and had triplets. The plan was to reduce down to two.
That being said, Dh and I agree that our magic number is 4. We would reduce if we got pregnant with 4. 3 we would keep unless my life was in danger or the docs really felt it was unsafe.

Re: Do you know anyone that did selective reduction
I only transferred one embryo on day 5 because I was totally afraid of multiples. DH and I were very firm on this with the RE and the RE supported our decision.

Re: Do you know anyone that did selective reduction
I personally could never do this, I would ask for less to be transfered if I didn't think I could handle more than that.

Re: Do you know anyone that did selective reduction
Personally I would not do this.
I got pregnant with my twins through IUI and injectables. I had 6 follies available and thank god only 2 fertilized.

Re: Do you know anyone that did selective reduction
I definitely think this is something you cannot state an opinion on unless you have been in those shoes KWIM? That being said, I do ahve a very good friend who got pg with trips from IUI. She chose to reduce to 2. They lost their baby girl in utero at 25 weeks and their son was born at 31 but perfectly healthy. She totally blames herself for reducing and feels like that caused the loss of her daughter. It didn't and it breaks my heart she feels that way but I can understand her feelings.

Re: Do you know anyone that did selective reduction
I have a friend who did. She did injectables/IUI and was told she only had 2 mature follies. Well, she got PG with quads. One reduced on its own around 11 or 12 weeks. Then she was faced with the decision. It was so difficult and she had been speaking to so many multiples specialists all around the country. She eventually chose to SR and I think it contributed to her and her twin boys being healthy. The third baby would have been a risk to them all but still a possibility at being viable. I don't know how she did it. SR happens rather late in the PG too...I think she was around 17 weeks or so. That's hard.

Re: Do you know anyone that did selective reduction
We were faced with the decision
Originally - we were PG with three
In the end, we chose not to do SR. The third was the smallest of the three and eventually stopped growing, so things were sorted out that way

Re: Do you know anyone that did selective reduction
I honestly do not know what I would do.
I would love twins or even triplets BUT anymore than that I don't know if I could carry them to term and if we could do that financially.
