Do you know someone who is addicted to drugs (Opioids, etc..., not marijuana)?
I live upstate and while I don't know anyone addicted to drugs, I know it is a huge problem in our area and in New England.

Yep, I'm in MA and it's bad here and in NH also. And in "nice" areas too. I wonder if there's any part of the country that isn't affected. Seems like you hear about some areas of the country more than others, but that could be because some places just aren't acknowledging it.

I said no but how would I really know? I think many, if not most, try to hide it.

I'm curious why the OP singled out marijuana in her original question? Is it because it's more socially acceptable? Legal in some places?
Another poster stated that marijuana is non-addictive and that's just not true. I know someone who was heavily addicted to it for years. Went to rehab and had withdrawal - including a seizure - coming off of it. It impairs judgement and definitely can cause addiction.
Regardless, I drive to work on the parkways behind cars that reek of pot. I can see the drivers puffing away while they're driving. In NY it still is illegal and I quite frankly, don't enjoy driving at 60mph next to someone getting high. Marijuana addiction is definitely also a problem on LI.

I feel like usually it gets to a point that you can't hide it anymore.
I don't know anyone personally addicted to drugs but I know that it is a huge problem. I know a former heroin addict who was arrested for robbery and I think going to jail saved his life. He has been clean for a long time now.
It scares me because I have young children and you see all of these teens getting addicted. I think education and awareness is the key. I have already started the dialogue with my children and they are only 5, 6 and 9.

I think in severe cases it is addictive but I also think you need to think really carefully before you trust a drug addict to tell you the truth about their use.

thanks read it and even the withdrawal are not that bad. I can see them being worse though like the link says if they were smoking while doing other drugs.

Marijauna Withdrawal
Like with opiods, there are benefits and negatives and if I were going to choose one as most dangerous it would be opiods. I just wanted to point out that no drug addict is trustworthy regarding their addiction. My brother spent a year in rehab and I never heard him admit to anything other than ecstasy use. He overdose 2 months later with a heroin packet in his wallet.

And it totally happens. I know several people, even my own uncle, who started with chronic pain and/or had a surgery, were given narcotics and it turned into a problem. My uncle was under the care of an ortho and pain management and they kept prescribing him narcotics. I'm not saying that it's their fault he developed an addiction, there is certainly a level of personal responsibility, but there has to come a time when a doctor realizes the patient needs to be weaned. Good doctors are aware and are all over this. My uncle ended up in rehab his pill habit was so bad. And if you knew my uncle, you NEVER EVER would think that he would be a pill head.

I was on Oxy for 2-1/2 months following double knee replacement. I can see how easily it is to become addicted. I took half the amount I was prescribed, it was enough to keep the pain at bay, let me get thru PT and to sleep for a little while. Bone pain is excruciating. I didn't feel high, just no pain for a little while.
I wasn't easy weaning off of Oxy though. Had to get used to the pain/discomfort without the use of narcotics.

Re: Do you know someone who is addicted to drugs (Opioids, etc..., not marijuana)?
Unfortunately, I do know someone who was a user but they worked hard to turn their life around. It's a huge epidemic all over the country. There are soccer mom addicts. There is an HBO documentary called Warning This Drug May Kill You that documents the lives of several addicts... many people you wouldn't even expect, nice middle to upper-middle class families, people with every opportunity in life. There was a mom of 3 addicted due to complications from a c-section! It's everywhere, not just in "bad" areas. What's scary to me is some of these people work hard to clean themselves up, get a job, a family, and can be clean for years, and they could go right back to using at any time. The addiction is just that strong. There is no cure.

Yes, lost a HS BF to an opiate OD, that was NJ ......currently know numerous people addicted to pills and heroin in NYC, orange and nassau counties.....like PP said its all over.
My sister is a pharmacist and you would not believe what goes on .......she doesn't even carry opiates in her pharmacy they must be ordered due to the safety of the employees.

I too notice cars around me on the road that smell so heavily of pot. I even passed someone in Party City the other day that smelled so badly of it. I find this happening more and more as well on the road and in stores.

Re: Do you know someone who is addicted to drugs (Opioids, etc..., not marijuana)?
both counties, we have a very dear friend who was addicted, he has since flipped completely around and is his normal/better self. A few we lost along the way, friends of friends type of things. This isnt a new problem, its just happening to regular people now and more are starting to see it in their own backyards. Its all doctors fault. scripts for heavy narcotics are being handed out like gummy bears for every freaking thing. I always go back to I had a dandc a few years ago,I got a script for Vicodin, I went to 5 CVS pharmacy locations from lake Ronkonkoma to east islip and NOT ONE had it pharmacy tech said they cant keep it in stock. THAT is a major issue.

I've heard that and it's interesting. I wonder why that is though. Do you think that access to legal marijuana makes less people start on the opioids? Do you think maybe they use pot to control their pain over reaching for a vicodin and then in turn getting addicted? I'd love to see the reasons behind that correlation.

I think the medical benefits for pot are ignored A LOT because its illegal. we gave it to my grandmother for her dementia, it helped her. But the stigma surrounding it because of its class, is what holds people back. I think it SHOULD be legal. MOST people drink 2-3 glasses of wine a night and thats perfectly fine in the publics eye. If I smoke a joint to help a pinched nerve, Im a dirtbag mother. simply because one is legal. its bull shit.

Agree that you shouldn't be judged for using it for the right reasons. Most don't. that is the problem.
AND Driving after 3 drinks and driving after smoking a joint still is driving under the influence. Legalizing it, allows it to be openly done while driving(although I already see and smell this often) and still impairing the person driving.
