Re: do you let your child watch TV?
I have the tv on all day...mostly for my sanity then for my daughter to watch. She has no interest watching "adult" shows. She loves Jack's Music show and I'll put that on for her a few times a day, like if I want to eat lunch or am making dinner and don't want her underfoot. Personally I beleive children learn alot from certain shows and it is only "harmful" if they are sitting infront of the tv all day instead of playing or interacting. Studies are just studies and you need to do what is best for your family and child.

I don't know....can an external factor actually CAUSE ADD? Or is it just about how a person is wired? I find it hard to believe TV cause ADD...but I'm not an expert. I take a lot of these studies with a grain of salt and use my best judgement. I don't need a study to tell me that it's not good for kids to watch too much TV but I don't believe the hype about it causing ADD.

Yes studies are just studies, but I do believe they are done for a reason, with that said I am not saying that I read every study or believe in all of them , and of course we don't need a studuy to know that kids (and adults) can get addicted to TV just like the computer and it can be very harmful in many ways ( including MAYBE causing ADD)

Both of our DC watch quite a bit of TV. We have closed captioning on all the time, and we interact with DC constantly. DS is easily several years ahead of most of his peers. He has been reading without assistance since about age 3 or so. His imagination is amazing. He can take a storyline from a show and expand on it to unbelievable depth. He is learning multiple languages (Spanish and Chinese) from TV.
I think TV is a tool, and if used correctly, can be very beneficial, but if used incorrectly, can cause problems. Nuclear fuel can either make cheap clean energy, or devastating bombs....
I don't get offended when people say TV is bad. I see first-hand how beneficial it has been for DS, so I will keep doing what works for us.
This is how I feel also. My kids watch quite a bit especially during this dreary winter when going out in the cold and snow is just not worth it. Come summer I'm sure it will be less. But it is always educational shows either Noggin, Sprout or PBS.
Same here - I joke around that she is addicted because she brings me the tv remote to change the channel to Noggin and the DVD remote to put on her Baby Einstein dvd. At 15 months she says about 40 words (including moo, ball, etc.) and will point to things on the tv we taught her on say B. Einstein and says "flower, ball, etc..." so I am not too concerned.

Re: do you let your child watch TV?
My DC is 11 weeks, so he is not watching TV yet. I really don't put it on that much during the day, a bit in the evening to watch Seinfeld reruns or the news, but that's about it. I got bored with it very quickly while home on leave!
I do plan to restrict TV during his early months and spend more time taking him for walks, reading to him, and letting him play. While he's very young, I just don't think he will get much out of tv at all, and he's better off interacting with the world at large. Frankly, he seems happier sitting in his rocking chair and looking out the window.
I have heard about the APA position for a few years now, and I have not seen the studies they base their position upon. I tend to think the kids in the study probably were plunked down in front of the tv for hours, and maybe watched shows that weren't meant for children. Or perhaps adults were not interacting with them outside of TV enough. At any rate, I probably will let him watch some TV before he is 2, but it would be educational programming. My thoughts are in moderation, it's probably okay.

Re: do you let your child watch TV?
I tried very hard to avoid tv. We made it ten months, then as DH was flipping, he stumbled upon Elmo and DD was hooked.
We bought her a few Elmo DVDs. Our house is for sale, and when DH and I are having a showing, we put a DVD in for her so that he and I can clean, vacuum, etc. I feel bad about it, but right now it's really a big help. I am not kidding myself that she's learning from it.
