do you let your children...
play baseball in your neighbor's backyard w/out asking their permission?
DH and i heard noise in our yard and it was the 2 girls from next door (we share a 2 family house w/ them, but have our own distinct backyards seperated by a fence)
was i wrong to ask their mother to get the girls out of our yard? (i asked very nicely) the mother knew they were back there in the first place...

Not at that point yet but no it's not appropriate.
What if they got hurt in your yard? Would the mother hold you responsible for them falling on your property?
If I was the mom, I would not be happy with my kids going into someone else's yard w/o the owner's and my permissions. What's wrong with their yard?

It definately is NOT appropriate.
I am very 'teritorial' though when it comes to stuff like that

ITA!!! - Nope Marnie you two did exactly the right thing - totally not appropriate for them to be in your yard without your permission.

Re: do you let your children...
OK, i feel better about saying something to the mother now. DH said i should have let it alone and not said anything. but i had the same concerns- if someone got hurt, if they broke a window, and i'm also very territorial.
our backyard is bigger than theirs, so i can understand the draw to play ball in it, but they were playing close to our house by the windows in a space that is the same size as their yard... the mother didnt think it was a problem for them to be there and admitted that they do it all the time
i hope this doesnt cause a problem w/ our relationship w/ them, b/c they have been great neighbors for the 2 years we have lived here... oy!

Me too! DS is very young but will NEVER be allowed to go on someone else property without their consent.

Re: do you let your children...
In the past I never minded the neighbors kids in my yard. BUT..now it's become a habit and it has royally started to annoy the heck out of me...
We had "topsoil" delivered at the end of last summer. It was mostly sand!!!! So we basically have a huge sandbox in our front yard. The kids across the street love to play in it. I didnt mind b/c it was cute in a way. But they leave their juiceboxes and toys all over the place..I cant wait to get DIRT delivered and the yard reseeded so I can put up a temp fence to keep them out...

No i would not let my child do anything in a neighbors yard.
Of course when i was a kid the neighborhood kids all ran in and out of all the neighbors yards playing tag or hide and go seek/manhunt.
So it does happen. But to actually play a game in someone elses yard...that is odd to me and NO you were not wrong for saying something.
Now a days you have to be careful and as a mom i would want to know if my kid was doing this. Who knows what you are doing in your yard. You could be easily planting and have holes in your yard that could break a kids ankle if they didn't see it
