I didn't grow up here, and don't want to raise children here (though we might end up staying). Coming from another area there is just such an emphasis on conspicuous consumption in so many towns on Long Island. I totally disagree with it and wouldn't want my children growing up believing that these material possessions dictate who they are. I didn't grow up in poor areas either--I grew up in one of the wealthiest towns in NJ and then went to boarding school in CT, but never have I seen what I saw moving here.
YES!! That is exactly how DH and i think.

I've often wondered about this. In my opinion, I've noticed that material possessions have become so important in recent years. I grew up on LI, and with the exception of college, I have lived here my whole life. I don't have much else to compare it to, but I've wondered if this "materiality" is only here or everywhere these days.
I wouldn't say it's "only" here, but it is very prevalent here!!

It's only here. Well, I guess I can't say *only* with 100% certainty, but it does not hold true for other places. And I saw it when I was growing up say 20 years ago. I was born in Smithtown and my cousin the same age grew up there when we moved. She was (and is) so materialistic. And I can't say it is all kids here, but the predominant attitude seems like more is better, bigger SUVs are better, more expensive bags are better...And I don't want my kids to feel like outcasts when the values I instill in them do not match the values of our community. When I see the kids at Walt Whitman Mall with the Tiffany necklaces and Coach bags...It just makes me sick. When I was in college someone asked me one day if I was from Long Island...It was not meant to be a compliment.

when I asked them what they put in their handbag they said "I don't know... stickers".

Re: Do you love living on LI?
I went to college upstate and EVERYONE made fun of LIers who had SUVs because when it snowed, no one even knew how to turn on the 4 wheel drive! Obviously this is not everyone, but there is a reason for generalizations...

Re: Do you love living on LI?
I love living on long island. My family is here and now that I'm married and we have a child I don't know how easy it would be to move off. I can get a job anywhere most likely but the same isn't the case for DH. So we'll probably end up staying here although it is so expensive for us.

Re: Do you love living on LI?
I'm so indecisive about this... I love the area because I'm comfy here, yet it's RIDICULOUSLY expensive to live here. You could get SO much more for your money elsewhere and live a more peaceful life. I don't know anymore...
