Do you only take the 3h glucose test if you fail the 1h test first?
I always read about girls taking 1h and 3h glucose tests.
You only have to take the 3h one if you fail the 1 hour one, correct?
I have to schedule my glucose test for next week.
Any tips on increasing my chances of not failing?
I'm assuming I should stay away from foods high in sugar prior to the test?

If you fail the one hour then you take the three hour.
There is no way to try and "help" your score. If you have GD you have it.... its all about how your body processes carbs and sugar.
I would eat like you normally do up until the test.

totally agree - if you have it - you have it.
only advice my doc gave me was: no sugary stuff that day - but do NOT fast.

Yup, either you have it or you don't.

I agree that you have it or you don't and there isn't really anyway to prepare.
The fasting thing seems to vary by Dr. My Dr. told me I had to fast for 8 hours before the 1 hour test. My test was first thing in the AM so it wasn't a big deal.

I agree. JMO, but I would never try to help my score. There can be some serious complications if you have GD, but aren't diagnosed or treated for it.
As far as fasting for the 1 hour, each doctor and lab seem to have different rules.

How is a 1 hour glucose test valid? I mean it might take some an more than a 1 to process carbs, plus they make you drink that sugar drink, which in reality you would never drink? It makes me wonder!

I don't believe in the current standard for testing.........
My midwife practice and a few OB's uses the American Diabetes association method of testing. Basically you eat a meal cosisting of 100 grams of carbohydrates and some protein and they take your blood 2 hours later. I feel that is a more realistic determination of how you body processes/handles the sugars.
VERY few PG women down 50 grams of sugar in one serving as a meal and nothing else.........
Numerous studies show that both the 1 hour and 3 hour glucose tolerance tests done the way they are lead to a high rate of false positives and misdiagnosis. Not to mention that quite a few women have horrible reactions (dizzines, nausea, fainting) as a result of the high sugar spike and then immediate "Drop" when insulin kicks in..........
