Do you plant your mums in the ground or leave them in the pots?

I think this year I might plant them. What do you do?

Right now, they're still in the pot. I think I'm leaving it that way.

i planted a few last year and they just came back this past week (i guess the rain and sunshine helped)
they grew a lot and are a bit wild looking, but generally they look good!
i have a few in pots that i bought this year and will probably plant those as well

I was told to always plant them - they last much longer that way

I have always left mine in the pots but I think that I will plant them this year after hearing what everyone is saying

Last year I got the most beautiful Mums through my DD's school PTA sale.

I didn't plant them and they died beyond the point of return.

So this year I am planting them right away. I am hoping that they make it back next year so that I don't have to buy new ones each year!

I am a real amateur at gardening and still learning.... I planted 4 this year, will they come back next year? I didn't think mums were perennials.

Yes, they will come back in the early summer. You have to cut them down once they get large, and then again probably the end of August. Then, around this time, they bloom!

We are gonna leave ours in the pots this year. Hope they last for the season! I like the way they look better on our stoop than in the ground.

Do you know at what point they start to bloom? I would love to plant mine but I don't want a dead looking thing all summer

Re: Do you plant your mums in the ground or leave them in the pots?

I planted some mums a few years ago, and they keep coming back every year. They stay green all summer, but by now they have gotten pretty big and are starting to bloom. We put annuals in pots all around our patio for the summer, and I like how when they start to fade in the fall, the mums are just starting to bloom.

they won't bloom until fall, but they don't look dead during the summer. They just have green leaves. Just make sure to snip off the dead branches from the previous year, and the new branches will continue to grow all summer.

I planted 4 or 5 of them last year, 1 came back. It looks great - huge and lots of flowers. I'm definitely planting more this year, hoping more survive.
It was just a plant with green leaves during the summer. It started to get buds in early September and bloomed last week.

I planted over a dozen 9" mums and about 8 9" asters this year. I'm crossing my fingers they make a full come back next year! (I'm not known for having a green thumb. Chat Icon )

I also drop large containers (I think they're 20") of mums in my urns at the front door and garage and then plant a couple of flats of 3" mums in my window boxes. (These are tossed come Christmas.)
