Do you serve breakfast items only for brunch?

OK- weird question.Chat Icon
I know brunch is supposed to be a hybrid of breakfast & lunch. However, all the foods I can think to make, and all the ideas I see online are really breakfast foods.

I know if you go to a brunch buffet there are more lunchy things--sometimes random ones like fried calamari & sushi.
We're definitely not having that.

Should I include more lunch items in my Christmas brunch?

Any ideas?

My menu isn't set yet, but there will be be something with eggs, something with potatoes, something carby (possibly baked French toast)

maybe a spinach tarte?

there only 4 of us, so I don't want to go crazy.

Thanks!

Have a spiral glazed ham and a nice potato salad with soft rolls on the side in case someone wants to make a sandwich. That always goes over well with a brunch.

ETA - The Pioneer Woman (google for her website) has a recipe for outrageous breakfast potatoes that have peppers and onions in them. They are insane, when I made them for my brunch people couldn't get enough. They also go well with the ham as well as the breakfast foods.

bah! I knew the answer was going to be ham. I hate ham! Chat Icon
I don't mind making it for others, but my MIL never remembers that I hate it & I feel like if I make it this will only encourage her! (yes, I need to get over this!)

I have a family potato recipe that I am going to make, but I may use the Pioneer Woman's pancake muffin recipe.

Thanks for your suggestions!

I usually just stick with breakfast as well. However, good lunch options to add would be: egg salad or tuna fish salad, a pasta salad of some kind, or cold cuts (best if you are doing a bagel platter).

This is good!! Maybe even a nice chicken salad would be nice too! Plus, these are all things you can make ahead of time.

I had a girlfriends holiday brunch last year and for lunch items I made chicken francaise andalso had a green salad. I had fruit salad, which I guess is an anytime type of thing, too.

I host a Mother's Day brunch every year. It's mostly breakfast items, but for the lunch stuff I usually do a green salad, pork tenderloin, a hot pasta dish and a platter of Italian meats and cheeses. I also always have bagels, cream cheese, and lox which can be both breakfast or lunch.

That's a lot of food! There will only be four of us, but is it Christmas, so I want it to be a little decadent, but DH & I will be eating an early dinner with my family later. It will probably also be more like lunch for my FIL because he is an early riser.

I am definitely thinking I need some kind of meat-ham, pork, roast beef, or salumi/cold cuts.

Now I just have to decided which one.

I am thinking of either a spinach or onion tarte for a lunchy vegetable item and figure out where to put all this!

thanks for all the suggestions!

I usually do a herb roasted turkey breast for brunch, along with the usual breakfast items. I've also done a glazed ham. Sausage stuffed mushrooms. Or a puff pastry filled with salami, provolone, and mustard. . .

Egg dishes can be savory, so I like a potato and prosciutto frittata, maybe a zucchini pie, something like that too, which could be either breakfast or lunch.

I would do bagels and spreads too.

I always do a savory quiche like spinach and mushrooms or a Quiche Lorraine.

Veggies and dip are always good, as is a cheese/meat and cracker platter.

Pasta dishes work well with brunch, too. I would go with an alfredo or oil based sauce though, not tomato.

I think it depends on what your guests like. I don't like breakfast foods, so I always appreciate some lunch items on a brunch menu. I can't tell you how many times I've gone to brunch and not been able to find anything to eat. If you want non-breakfast options I think pasta and salad are good choices.

Thanks--that's a good point. While I know they all like breakfast food, my FIL will most likely have eaten breakfast before church since he gets up early, so he may not want breakfast foods.

Salad with brunch seems so strange to me, although I guess it is normal to have it as a side with a quiche or frittata.

I think I will do a fruit salad though & a vegetable dish.

I don't want to do pasta just because DH & I are having pasta later for 2nd Christmas. Chat Icon Chat Icon

We are doing brunch this year for Christmas and will have baked french toast, fruit, quiche, fresh pasta with bolognese, and a tray of different types of meat.
