Do you still color or highlight your hair????
i'm just curious if everyone has stopped all together or if you still continue to get your hair colored.
my dr. said that she OKAYYY with getting it colored but NOT highlighted - but to wait until after 12 weeks.
but to me by saying to wait until after 12 weeks means that maybe it is not soo great???
just curious to see everyones thoughts and what everyone is doing.
TIA!!!

Re: Do you still color or highlight your hair????
My doc said it's really fine to do either but if I wanted to ease my own fears to wait until after the first trimester though it doesn't really matter. I did wait, and actually just dyed it this past weekend for the first time, i'm 17 weeks now. I feel soooooo much better.

Re: Do you still color or highlight your hair????
My cousin is an OBGYN and won't dye hers until afte the 1st trimester .....She has dark hair and I'm not sue what kind of process my sister uses to cover her gray .......
My highlights are painted in sparingly so nothing actually touches my scalp, but I'm still kind of nervous about it .........I'm going to the Dr. for the 1st time on Friday so I have to ask b/c I desperately need something done .........

Re: Do you still color or highlight your hair????
I personally stopped both because I wanted to enjoy my last couple of years of natural haircolor before I'll be forced to color (once I go grey).
My doc said coloring is ok after 2nd tri.

Re: Do you still color or highlight your hair????
My Dr. said no problem after 1st Trimester, but I actually haven't colored my hair since we started trying to TTC 2 years ago! I'm going to start again after the baby's here though because I'm finding more and more grey hair

Re: Do you still color or highlight your hair????
ok, I'll chime in again.
I don't know why, but things are always deemed safe until a study has proven it is not. Problem is, there are practically NO STUDIES involving hair dye or highlighting and pregnancy.
Becuase there are no studies, hair colorists and physicians reassure moms-to-be that it is 'safe'.
But in reality, NO ONE KNOWS! (No FDA or NIH studies that I can find). What if an ingredient in a certain hair dye DOES affect the baby? How would you tell? What ever the problem would be, it could be attributed to millions of different things.
Keep in mind a few things:
dyes are some of the most TOXIC compounds. in our lab, they're stored on the same 'danger shelf' as neurotoxins from cobras and other 'fun' stuff. yep, they're THAT bad. To boot, food coloring is also that bad, except it's considered safe becuase it's so diluted in the food (except for red velvet cake where they use a bottle instead of a few drops... please girls, stop eating red velvet cake!)
All hair dyes have different ingredients... they would have to test every active ingredient in your particular dye to deem it 'safe'.... it will never happen
'Natural' is not equivalent to 'safe'. there are a lot of really toxic natural substances (think mushrooms, digitalis, poison ivy, cobra venom...). So don't let a hair stylist reassure you that their natural dye is harmless. After all, they're not toxicologists
I obviously am holding off. I normally have a few mild highlights in my hair, but it's grown out since Jan. It's fine. That and the nail polish (same scenario, no one ever showed the xylene, acetone, and other organics are safe, so my toes are not their standard revlon red ) have been banned until Scone is born.

Re: Do you still color or highlight your hair????
I have highlighted my hair since I passed my 1st trimester. I am going by what my doctor says. I highlighted my hair twice when I was pregnant with my first son and he turned out fine.

WOWWW. thank you. that is more info. then i would have ever found!! my dr. is one of the one that says "everything in moderation" so sometimes i get nervous. she really wasnt against it but i dont like the "wait until after the first trimester". i feel like if its not safe in the 1st trimester - its not safe at all. thanks again.

no prob. I feel compelled to chime in when I know I have some extra info (due to my profession) that others just can't access.
This whole "It's safe until someone proves it's not" thing really concerns me. I think it's becuase the gov't doesn't want to punish various industries (chemical, beauty, food, home improvement) without overwhelming proof of danger... and since there's so much they could study, they just avoid most of it, and brush everything under the rug.
horrifying really. but since I work with these individual chemicals, I get health sheets warning researchers what PPE we should wear to not get sick. So, becuase of these sheets, I KNOW that nail polish solvents are NOT safe, since they absorb into the skin... My gut instinct is the same with dyes, since we're warned that they're carcinogens and toxic when in a concentrated form.

Re: Do you still color or highlight your hair????
not enough studies to prove it does any harm but always be cautious of the first trimester.
I have and dr ok'd after the 14th week, in fact I am going to go very soon before baby comes!!!!!! that and all waxed up!

I colored my hair this past weekend (I am 11 weeks). I did it suring my who first pregrancy too. My hairstylist uses a color that has a lot less peroxide in it.

Re: Do you still color or highlight your hair????
I waited until after my 1st trimester was over and so far have only done it once (I'm 29 weeks) I have another appointment the week before my shower (at 31+ weeks) and don't think I'll do it again until meatball arrives.
I do single process color.

I still color it. The type my stylist uses isn't permanent so I felt okay with it and so was my doctor.

Yes I highlighted it at 12 weeks and I just did it again last week for my shower this weekend. I was able to go so long because it was the summber but I would have highlighted it more if needed.

Re: Do you still color or highlight your hair????
When I was about 6 weeks-I dyed it myself using a vegetable dye called Naturcolor. I got it at the organic store in Babylon on DPA. I recently dyed and highlighted my hair at home with a regular kit with my Dr's permission. I sat outside while i waited for it to develop to get lots of fresh air. That is probably teh last time I will do it until after they are born

Re: Do you still color or highlight your hair????
I had my highlights touched up at 21 weeks. I felt totally comfortable with it, since there is no dye actually coming into contact with the skin.
I would think that coloring your whole head would be more risky...

Re: Do you still color or highlight your hair????
Last pregnancy, I did herbal dying and it covered my gray hairs very well. I'm not sure what I'll do this pregnancy---but probably the same thing.
ETA: I used Herbatint if anyone is interested in checking it out.
