Re: Do you still take medicine if it is expired??

hmmm, i try to stay on top of my med cabinet, but if they are less than a year, i still usually take them. I think that the exp. date means that they may not be as effective, but I didn't think harmful. After a year exp I'd def. get rid of them. That's interesting that the dr. says they are fine...are the exp dates just so we buy new meds??

OTC stuff I often do, depending on what it's for. Prescription stuff I don't. Stuff that is more than a year expired, I don't take, though.

there are expiration dates for a reason. Usually after it expires it's not as effective. I don't take anything after an expiration date.

I have taken expired Benadryl at times that I just could not get to a drug store and had an allergy attack. I'd prefer not to, though.

I live by the "better safe than sorry" phrase. I throw it out when it is expired.

i worked as a pharmacy tech right out of high school. customers asked this all the time. The Pharmacist said that most OTC items and precription drugs usually have a 2 year life AFTER the expiration date. Manufactureres kind of expect that people will take it either knowingly or not.

I agree with the PP that said that the medicine is usually not as effective once it gets past the expiration date, so I toss once the date has passed.

On a side note, my mom once took Tylenol that was expired by at least 6 months, and she had some weird hallucinations and had to go to the hospital. So since then, better safe than sorry!
