Re: Do you think $10,000 is a lot of money?
For Joe and I yes. I would love to have that in savings on top of our 401K. I think lifestyle, salary, and monthly bills play a huge factor including location. In MI that is but say NY, Chicago, CA that is not much. I think it depends.

If her DH would get paid for one year if he lost his job then I would say that's enough for them. especially since the bills are low.

I'd say maybe. the problem is with oil costs going up so much, and the very bad job market, it could go faster than you think.
We have well over a years woth of bills saved, but now that we aren;t going to buy a house, we'll be transferring some of that money to CDs and and IRA, where it will be less accesible.

Yes, $10,000. is a lot of money. I heard that you should have atleast 6 months worth of your bill saved in an Emergancy fund. You need to figure that out if that $10,000. is that number.

Re: Do you think $10,000 is a lot of money?
It would cover us for about 2 months, so no, I don't think it's a lot of money.

I guess its better than nothing.
Why do you ask? Did you think that your friend had alot or not enough?

Re: Do you think $10,000 is a lot of money?
No, it would only cover 3 months of living expenses for us (mortgage, utlities, bills), and we are only two people.

Re: Do you think $10,000 is a lot of money?
I think it's a safe amount to start out with. That's actually DH & my amount we NEVER want our joint savings to dip below.
My goal is to never have to go back to using credit cards again, which is why we have gotten so anal about saving as much as possible.

It's a lot if you win it, say, in a contest...for extended living in NY...it's not, realistically.

For her situation, I thought she was doing ok because she has been spending less and saving more and her bills are really not too high.
