Do you think DSs ped is too laid back?
We went to DSs 9 month check up the other day and discussed introducing table food. At this point DS had only had breastmilk, cereal and baby purees. He said that we can give him anything we are comfortable with, with the only restriction being peanut butter.
DH and I both do not have any food allergies and there are no known food allergies in the family but really?
So based on the other thread asking about eggs, DS's ped said both yolk and whites are fine, as is shellfish and everything else.
Oh, and he said cow's milk is ok too. Whole or 2%.
Wow.

Re: Do you think DSs ped is too laid back?
Every ped has a different opinion about these things. Ours had us wait on shellfish, whole eggs, and milk until 1 year, but I know many others who were fine with it earlier. Bottom line: if YOU aren't comfortable with it, then wait.

Re: Do you think DSs ped is too laid back?
Every ped is different. Ours feels very strongly about delaying peanut butter and egg whites, but is more laid back about milk and berries. When it comes down to it, you can decide to hold off on anything you want, even if your ped thinks you can give it.

Re: Do you think DSs ped is too laid back?
Even published experts don't agree. Some say that earlier introduction reduces the chances of allergies, while others say to delay allergenic foods until DC are older, so they can handle a potential reaction better.
Since we have no family history of allergies, we introduced pretty much all foods relatively early, with no side effects, and our ped was on board with that. For us, that worked. For others, it might not. There's nothing inherently good or bad about a ped recommending food introduction at 9mo, it's just a matter of what you're comfortable with.

Re: Do you think DSs ped is too laid back?
My ped has a short list of foods to avoid until 1 year and another until 3 years. Some of it I agree with, and some of it I don't. Every ped is different. My SILs ped gave the green light for eggs and peanut butter and my niece is 9 months (same age as DD), but my ped said no eggs until 1 year and no nut products until 3 years. Bottom line - do what you're comfortable with. You're the parent, not your ped. DD is 9 months and eats just about anything we do, with the exception of a few items on our peds list that I agree with.

Re: Do you think DSs ped is too laid back?
At 6 months our ped told us anything we were eating (as long as it was soft enough, of course) was fine, except honey. She recommended whole eggs, in fact. We have no history of allergies and, as PP pointed out, experts are split on if holding off helps or adds to allergies. My DD had all of the high allergy foods, except shellfish, before her first birthday.
If you want to hold off on certain foods, you can certainly do that, but I don't think your ped is out of line.

Re: Do you think DSs ped is too laid back?
We gave DS everything under the sun as soon as he was interested in table food - around 9 mos, including shellfish et al.
He moved to whole milk at 10.5 mos (was given the go-ahead at 10mos but still had some formula in the house and didn't want to waste it).
I prefer the old school mentality like this but if you're not comfortable, hold off.

Re: Do you think DSs ped is too laid back?
I agree every doctor is different. Even different doctors in the practice my girls go to. One said fruit and cereal at 4 months and the other said vegetables only for a while then add fruit. I think it is just their opinion. My brother in law is a ped and he says wait until 5 months until adding cereal and purees.

Ours at 9 months said anything except shellfish and honey.
Have you tried puffs?

Re: Do you think DSs ped is too laid back?
My ped was like yours and I ended up finding a new one. I appreciated the laid back approach in some ways but when it came down to it I felt like I needed more guidence, especially as a first time mom.
I think the approach is fine as long as you are comfortable with it.

Agreed. DS 1 was 95% on table food at 9m. At a BBQ at that age he had hot dogs and pasta salad. Ds2 was having whole milk at 10m in addition to his formula.
At ds2 1 year appt, the Dr said hold off on shellfush, honey and pb(chocking hazard) but DS has had, crab already, pb ice cream and Cheerios.
As I say, I listen to my eds advice, but I also follow my gut, he is my son and I know him best. Do what you are comfortable with.

Re: Do you think DSs ped is too laid back?
Not at all. Eggs should be fine by 9 months, fish- no more than 1-2 servings per week. The only thing we kept from our kids was peanut butter until 3. DS is 5 and just started eating it.
