Do you think it's important for DC to attend nursery/preschool in an area within your SD?
Do you think it's important to go to preschool within your SD area?
(sorry I had to clarify)

Re: Preschool in an area within your SD a must?
It wasn't a requirement for me when I was looking for preschools for DS.
But at the same time, since I have to do pick up and drop off I certainly wanted it relatively close to the house for convenience.
The preschool we picked is actually in the next district over. But I would imagine plenty of kids from our school district will be there.

My ILs watch our DDs. We lived in Lake Grove (Suffolk) and they live in Wantagh (Nassau). We put DD#1 in a preschool near my ILs b/c they were going to be the ones driving/picking her up. Now we are living with my ILs for a few months, but when we move out again we will keep her in preschool in Wantagh.

Re: Do you think it's important for DC to attend nursery/preschool in an area within your SD?
The only reason I could think of (and it may not be that important to others) is that I wanted him to make friends with local kids that he will eventually go through middle and high school with. I sent him to a private school for a 3 year program but got him into the free Universal Pre-K this year. Two other kids from his class last year also got into the UPK and they were so excited to be together again this year. Now, I know as he gets older, he will make new friends and we can't guarantee that his best friends will be in the same class every year but at least he has a nice base of friends that he is comfortable with. I am hoping that it will help with the transition to Kindergarten.

I think it depends on what YOU personally want. I don't think you have to do it at all but it is a personally preference sort of question. But for me I personally like that she will go to school with the children she has known since she was 2. I know I plan to stay in this town for a very long time. I think I might feel differently if I thought I would move to a different town in a couple of years then I might not feel as strongly about it. Also my town has a lot of people who grew up here and returned so it is a pretty close knit and I think it helps the transition to Kindergarten if they know at least a couple of other children.

I can see why you would want one near your SD. DS's school is near our district but we mostly chose it because of convienience for DH and I.
However, if I found another school with a better program I would probably go with that. Besides, a lot of students in DS's daycare actually are not in my district. Their parents send them there either because it is on their way to work, near a train station or near their job.

I thought it was and picked one in our SD but it turned out that it didn't matter. Kids in DD's Kindergarten class went to so many different schools, different times, different schedules, etc that she only has one girl from her preschool in her K class, and that girl lives on our block so they knew each other anyway.

when looking at preschools, that wasn't a concern of mine.
There are 2 elementary school buildings in our district so even with a PS in our neighborhood its likely that many of the kids wouldn't be in the same building or classroom anyway (and there's no guarantee they're even from the same SD).

Re: Do you think it's important for DC to attend nursery/preschool in an area within your SD?
I really didn't give it much thought when I first enrolled DS in the school. Now that he is entering kindergarden in Sept. it does make me a little sad that his friends will not be there. Although, the kindergarden is one for the whole district (a separate school) and then when they go to 1st grade they get split between 3 elementary schools, so in the end it doesn't really matter I guess. I picked a nursery school that is the next district over but only 3 miles from my house. The main reason for picking the school besides it be good is how close it is. There are kids in both of my children's classes that drive anywhere from 15-20 minutes each way. I think that is crazy considering the half day program is 2.5 hours.

similar situation here.....since my parents watch DD 3 days a week, I will look for a pre-school near them since my mom will be dropping her off and picking her up.

Re: Do you think it's important for DC to attend nursery/preschool in an area within your SD?
Kind of similar, but with daycare:
We had DD in a daycare near work. We wanted to be near here and be able to pop in for lunch.
When we changed day care, we ended up choosing a place near our home.
Now, I wouldn't have it any other way. It's convenient but they are also making friends with kids that will be in their school down the road.
It's more convenient for playdates-all the kids live nearby. Same for birthday parties-we go to one almost every week it seems!
Also, when the do community events, it is within our community which is nice.

Re: Do you think it's important for DC to attend nursery/preschool in an area within your SD?
I think it would make an easier transition to Kindergarten, but it's not a deal breaker for me. DD is at a daycare that isn't in our SD. I have formed friendships with some of the moms and we have weekend playdates. I am sure that will end when they hit school, but we'll all make new friends. It will be sad, but life goes on.

I think it really depends on the child. If a child is very shy, I would want him in the same district.

Re: Do you think it's important for DC to attend nursery/preschool in an area within your SD?
It was a perk that he may make some friends he would go ito kindergarten with, but for me it was more so that I loved the school and it's very close to my home. The school has such a good reputation that 80% of the kids in his class aren't from our SD. I'll be lucky if he has one friend in his kindergarten class.

Yes, I want DS to make friends who he will be in school with, and it will be more convenient for playdates and parties.

ITA 100% except DS started at 3. DS's preschool is such a welcoming family like atmosphere - much like the town - I'm happy that he will grow with these children and families and, DD already has playmates that will be in her class when the time comes! But, as lillykat said - i love it here and plan to stay - if I didn't I wouldn't be committted at all to where he went.
