Re: Do you think Kindergarteners should be taught about Aids??
My nephew is starting kindergarten in the fall, and my sister's aware of this new program. She said parents have an option not to take it.
Randi Weingarten, pres. of the UFT was on talk radio this afternoon, and even she's not thrilled with it. She said kids don't even get recess anymore, and the amount of things a 5 year old needs to know is way to much for a kid that age. This type of program, while important for middle/high school kids is not appropriate for 5 yr olds.

Re: Do you think Kindergarteners should be taught about Aids??
Yes, I do think they should be taught about AIDS and HIV in an age appropriate way. There's tons of things kids that young can know about AIDS and HIV that has nothing to do with sex or drugs. For instance, that biting and scratching another child can get them sick, that they shouldn't touch other people's blood, if it's wet and it's not yours...DON'T TOUCH IT! Etc. I think that you are never too young to know those things.
ETA: AIDS and HIV are not just sexually transmitted diseases. And how is a child going to know that they are if no one tells them? There are lots of things in life that you learn about in stages and steps. Why can't this be one of them?

In general kids should know not to touch someone elses blood or any type of bodily fluids... it's a personal hygiene thing... Germs I don't think that it has to be about HIV/AIDS

Re: Do you think Kindergarteners should be taught about Aids??
I teach kindergarten and I would never bring it up in my classroom. I don't think its something that they need to be exposed to yet. I do think its important to teach them about germs, was to prevent getting sick, and not touching someone else's blood.

I feel like that's a little bit young. You lose so much innocence when you have to learn about and understand such tragedies.

This is true, but they don't need to learn about anythign tragic, just that they need to keep away from other people's blood, saliva, etc. It annoys me because the news is making it seem like they are teaching kids gory details, when in reality, it's more of a hygiene/germ lesson than an AIDS lesson.

I agree with the curriculum. It's a shame the media doesn't present the facts more.
As a mom of a kindergartner next year, I'm fine with them learning about germs, how to handle accidents, etc. In daycare, they've already been taught about germs to the extent that I'm hearing "Eeewww...stop touching me, I don't want your germs." on a daily basis.
As for learning the specifics of AIDS, I think the fact that it's a germ & you can die from it is enough until they're older. As much as I'd love to preserve their innocence as long as possible, my ideas went out the window on that during the first "What if a stranger takes me?" conversation.

Kind of, but only to the extent that they shouldn't touch blood, drink from other kids, spit, bite etc.

I don't think they should know about it. I feel it;s MY job to tach my kids about this stuff. That's all I need is my son to come home from kindergarten next year talking about this stuff. When did we stop letting kids be kids? They should start learning this at around 7th grade IMO.

We teach about not touching others blood. There is a video we are mandated to show in 2nd grade. It talks about kids who get hurt on the playground and are bleeding, you go to a teacher etc. It is very basic. I feel it is for there own protection.
i think the staying away from blood part is the most important part of the lesson. I guess they have to introduce that deadly diseases are in blood; and since HIV+ students must remain anonymous - its necessary I guess.

no, I don't think they would fully understand and it will just scare them. I feel children should be made aware in elementary school or middle school.

Re: Do you think Kindergarteners should be taught about Aids??
I work with kids and todays kids are VERY smart! I attribute it to what they are learning in school and at home. TV has a lot of influence on kids too and the kids hear these words just from the news and on shows.
I dont think they are too young to learn about aids in the non sexual way and if it was the sexual way, maybe its a good starter to get kids at a young age to be afraid to have sex early or to have unprotected sex. there are too many young girls having babies and young kids having sex.
In the world we live in, nothing can be shocking to teach our children and I feel awareness is still letting our kids be kids too, just smarter!

No...I do not think it is necessary. Let kids be kids...they still have time to learn about AIDS.
I agree

Re: Do you think Kindergarteners should be taught about Aids??
TOTALLY UNNECESSARY at 5! I am not opposed to teaching kids about smaller areas related to AIDS but no not full AIDS. Its the same thing as SEX...I think its okay for a 5 yr old to ask where does a baby come from...BUT...NO, you are not going to say ...WELL, me and daddy did it on march 15th and this is what happened. I think some things are too advanced for a 5 yr old and I think this is one area.

Re: Do you think Kindergarteners should be taught about Aids??
There are so many people living with HIV that I think it is important to teach children about it...without scaring them...I guess that is the tricky part.
I would much rather my child learn about HIV or any other serious disease from me or another well informed responsible adult...then from some other child on the play ground who doesn't have all his/her facts straight.

God...why cant we let the kids be kids without making them grow up so fast???
Exactly! Then people wonder how a young child could suffer from stress!

I think they should be taught about germs and to not bite, touch each other's blood, etc, but I don't think AIDS necessarily needs to be brought into that discussion.

I do agree that parents should be the ones to address it, but the sad reality is, many parents are not informed themselves. I have had students who have gotten so much information about sex related things, and either they are too shy to approach their parents, or the parents are misinformed.
And let's face it, the women on this board represent a group who are informed and intelligent and the ones who have kids want to do right by them and shelter them. Not all kids have that, unforunately. I think in that case it's the responsibility of the school. In NYC it seems like so many of us function as surrogate parents anyway, to kids whose parents are indifferent or not around enough.

Re: Do you think Kindergarteners should be taught about Aids??
I don;t know if it's necessary at 5, ut I think it should be taught at a young age. From what i heard about the AIDS curriculum, they said 5 year old would only learn that it's a terrible disease. However, without going into detail about how you can and cannot catch it, it might just be more harmful than good. Though I guess you can just tell them you can get it from blood transfusions, drugs and "adult activities". I think maybe 7 or 8 is a more appropriate age, even though it's still too young for them to actually partcipate in behaviors that would spread AIDS, the younger they learn about it, the better to an extent, so it just becomes a part of them that they will always understand. I ahd my first AIDS classes when I was about 9 or 10, and this is when the AIDS crisis was really in the news (around 1991-1992). It didn't scare me at all at that age since we were told repeatedly that you can't catch it from touching, or kissing, and that it was only communicable through blood, needles and sexual contact. it actually made me feel a lot safer to know that what I was hearing about on TV was not something I could catch (kids pick up a lot from TV), and it really instilled in me from an early age how to stay "safe"
