do you think my 3 day old has eaten enough today?
I am so worried that he isn't getting enough to eat.. the nurses at winthrop told me that I SHOULD wake him up to eat, even though I know alot of you ladies say NOT to do that.. I am torn.. here is what he ate today:
12am - .5 oz formula 2am - 1 oz formula 3:30am - almost .75 oz formula 5:50am - 1 oz formula 9 am - 15 min on each breast 11:45am - 10 min on one breast 12:22pm - 15 min on other breast 12:43pm - 10 min on one breast 3pm - .5 oz formula
between 12:43 & 3, he threw up some formula chunks so at the 3 pm feeding I gave him Similac for gassy babies i/o regular & that seemed to stay down & then he fell asleep & couldn't get him to wake up to drink anymore.
Do you think I gave him enough to eat? I just want to add that so far today, he has only had 1 poopy diaper & 4 wet ones.

If he's not crying out in hunger, then I believe he's eaten enough. I never woke my girls up to eat. Lastly, I know you didn't ask, but if you don't mind I'm about to give you my 2 cents. If you are trying to establish BF, I think you are relying too much on the formula only 3 days into this. I read your other post about the pain, and trust me...I know! You will see...in a week or two you won't have any more pain. I think your body just needs time to adjust to BF...but you really need to do it quite regularly and supplementing several feedings in a row is going to be counterproductive.

I see that you are offering the breast. Are you planning on BFing or are you just doing it for the colustrum benefits? Babies don't need to eat for the first 3 or 4 days of their life...so you are good. AND...your schedule looks good. If you are planning on BFing and want to maintain a supply, it's important to offer the breast every 2 hours for the entire 24 hour period...and not supplement with formula. In anycase, it looks like your LO did well today!!! Congrats and Good Job Mama!!

Babies DO need to eat for the first 3 - 4 days of their lives. Its the first 24 hours that its not critical.
Unless your baby is CRYING because he is hungry, then I'd say everything is ok.

Re: do you think my 3 day old has eaten enough today?
My plan was to breastfeed & give him formula. I'd like to start giving him formula right before bed so that he sleeps longer at night.
What DS does is he opens his mouth & begins to look around almost like he is looking for food and that is when I feed him. My mom doesn't agree with the Dr- she says I should let him sleep if he is sleeping & not wake to eat.. ughh, I wish babies could speak.
